Rob,

shouldnt you already have a better than std coil, :?:
just a pal of mine runs Motec and his std coil was ditched when he got the motec put on.

Nope standard nissan 5hite  That's why I'm looking to change it :D

what wrong with standard shite then!!!! with turbo plug gaps being small you don,t really need huge amount of power to make the spark jump.

If you have a more powerful coil then in theory you should be able to run a bigger plug gap which gives smoother running, better fuel consumption etc etc

 not convinced with greater cylindar pressure in combustion chamber you have to reduce the gap on the plugs to make the spark jump and to increase the the flame travel once combustion has been
intiated, i can understand if when running really high level that an uprated coil could be useful but what sort power level would the standard coil be come nonefficient? what is the standard coil rated at interms of voltage? at what voltage does the spark jump? i can understand if your going the d.i.s route or upgrading to indiviual coil per cyl as some manufactuers do but is the extra expense necesarry?

I'm not worried about cost Zia I'm just thinking that my standard coil is now over 10 years old and can't be working as well as it was when new.

Also the new MSD coil is only $63 delivered to my door not a lot really is it :?: , I prob couldn't buy a standard replacement from nissan for that  , In the long run I'd like to change to a coil per plug as my motec will work well with that set up, But for now I'll give this a bash :D .

the gti-r coil should be pretty good...but it is 12 years old and the engine bay, and vribration, and heat can damage it...
i asked a nissan dealer the price for a new one and the price was amazing!!!!approx 300 euro!!200£!!!!!!!!!crazy!!!
so fitting a msd coil should be a good idea..even considering the price!!!

I'm between stools on this argument. I understand the advantages of a better coil but without doing the Maths I'd be surprised if it made much difference over standard.

A new one should improve the potential of your spark but won't increase the energy of your spark. The only way you'd do that is by having a capacitor as well or increasing the size of your battery.

I almost bought one but instead bought a "blue print" coil for £20, identical to nissan but without the logo and a 50% bigger battery for £50.
I chose this route as my battery was knacked and my coil was 12 years old. Not very technical but appropriate for me.

Upgrading your electrical system is like the engine of a car. Just changing one thing might not make much of a difference unless you've already got good leads, earths, battery, distibutor, coil. I'm an electrical engineer but this is not my specialist area so I'd be interested in other people's comments.

I have also changed my battery for a big oil burner one and moved it to the boot   .

And everything else is new also, I'm thinking of haveing a new engine loom made up to over winter, Or buying one from nissan   .

i already have magnecor leads, new battery moved to the boot, new rotor and dizzy cap...so i think changing the coil could be a good thing.
especially considering it is old and can fail at any time.
with the new msd coil i don't expect much performance, it is just a new part that can prevent coil failure...

Magnecor are going to make me a new KV85 coil lead for my new MSD coil, 2 foot long so I can mount it away from the heat of the engine  .

Ps if anybody want's a set of 10mm leads thet will make you a set to order 8) .

The main reason i replaced mine is because its had it. I dont know the specs on the factory coil but apparenly assuming its working as it should its good enough. But i bet theres no way its anywhere near as powerfull as a blaster hvc 2 you only have to look at the specs to see that.

The primary resistance of our coil is .9ohms the secondary 13kohms.

The msd coil is totally different .16ohms primary and 630ohms secondary.
The big difference between the msd and stock is this particular msd coil is rated to produce 450ma peak current with a very long spark duration of 450uS. As i say i dont know the specs for the stock coil but i bet it doesnt come anywhere near the peak current and spark duration of the msd. That kind of power can only help at high rpm where the stock coil would have very little time to recover and charge up again.

Also its not just the coil you must think about its the supply voltage to your stock coil if you upgrade to a msd ignition box it will help the supply voltage to your coil and provide a few extra features like mulitple sparks at low rpm. (which does make a nice difference).

Also another cool thing about the digital 6+ is if you wire the ignition retard and the two step rev limit together to a 12v switch and set the retard to about 1.5deg - 2deg you can build + boost on the line before launching which can stop the car from bogging down. And thats just one of the things you can do theres other stuff aswell.

Rob I take it this coil lead is 8.5mm? Can they not make a 10mm one? How much was it...?

What are the Magnecor leads like for fitment?

Some aftermarket leads are no better than new OE but have a slack fit. I had to bin a set on my other car due to water ingress coroding the terminals

How much where the magnecors?

Hello mate  .

Yes it's an 8.5mm lead, I wanted to get a 10mm but was told that it would be over kill as there only really used on top drag car's.

And on are road/track and weekend drager's there's no point as the KV85's are more than up to the job 8) .

But they will make you anything you want, So if you really want a 10mm set there make it for you. As for the cost there gonna get back to me in the next few day's.

Thanks Rob.

Yeah I may contact them about a 10mm one, as the rest of my leads are 10.4mm. Let me know how you get on... ie cost/time.
