Is it common for an engine to be a bit top end tapperty after a rebuild?
I'm thinking maybe the bedding oil is too thin?
Make sure you wear knee protection! - If you're astride the engine you could hit your knees on all sorts of things; especially the manifolds.if that doesn't work, rub your balls on them.
yes, check the clearances before you do anything else. For whatever reason some shims might have been swapped , so one or more might be loose and consequently, some could be tight.Nice! Check Clearences,

I took the turbo to owen developments who are just down the road from me.
