Cock it. You spoke too soom mark- just snapped the turbo actuator arm trying to adjust it. Crappy thing!

Wanted turbo actuator asap

All done. I had a few issues along the way-

Snapped the turbo actuator arm- not a bad thing really as I suspected the old one wasn't up to the job anymore! Owen developments sorted out my turbo within hours of delivering it by setting up a new forge actuator on it.

When I went to start it up the starter turned once or twice then there was a spark and a puff of smoke came out from the engine (head in my hands at this point as I was worried about all sorts of wiring problems) but after a quick inspection it turned out that the engine earth thread on the thermostat had been stripped- quick tap and a bigger bolt and it turned over perfect

When warming up I went to clean something and when I came back there was a massive water puddle on the floor :( turned out to be the water feed for the oil cooler (I didn't fit the clip on properly I'm ashamed to say) what a twat that pipe is to get to!

All in now and I just done a compression check which came out at 167, 168, 166, 169 which I'm happy with.

Is it common for an engine to be a bit top end tapperty after a rebuild?

I'm thinking maybe the bedding oil is too thin?

Can be if not set correct when assembled. Bedding oil could make tapping more noticible. If not too bad run it for a while & se how it goes & reshim if required ...

If you think there's a problem check the clearances, if the valve seats have been recut etc the clearances usually tighten up a tiny amount as the engine is run.

Don't forget to check BOTH clearances on each valve at the same time, don't do one at a time as that will skew the result.

if that doesn't work, rub your balls on them.

Nice! Check Clearences,
yes, check the clearances before you do anything else. For whatever reason some shims might have been swapped , so one or more might be loose and consequently, some could be tight.

rub balls on them and always wear protection of the knees. Got it.
Obviously, the two previous posts weren't helpful in the slightest and whilst they tried to inject some humour they shouldn't have been posted, i hope you weren't traumatised by them.

I think with a little counceling- ill be fine!

I will be a bit pissed off if the clearances are out as I paid a company to shim the head properly!

if you've not done the job yourself all the more to double check if something isn't right.

shouldn't take that long to check the clearances, just make sure the lobe for that pair of valves is pointing up.

If you see any stray pubes, remove them before carrying on....

Did you manage to get the forge actuator on nice and tight on the wastegate flapper?I had to space mine out on the bracket a little to get it tight enough, can't see any one your photo.

it should be adjustable, if you can't shorten the rod then cut some of it off

I took the turbo to owen developments who are just down the road from me. They fitted and adjusted everything for me.
