Finding a solution to breaking gearcases on high power Rs

I wonder if the bearings are letting go first then jamming and then taking the casing with them? I take it that is a taper bearing or is it just a trick of the picture?

look's like an os giken bearing? who is it? that the layshaft is it? did he launch it? quaffie is semi helical not full helical.

I thought helical gears were part of the problem and that sraight cut would be better?

well its made my mind up about going to a straight cut box tbh, i dont want to be sat here sometime in the future with a pile of bits wishing i'd swapped to a straight cut gearset.

dont get me wrong, the quaiffe is obviously a good option for a decent power, occasional drag, occasional track mainly road driven car, and strengthing the case will definately help but the way my car is going spec wise i think it'll end in tears

i've no real interest in having it as a road car anymore so straight cut wont be any bother, it'll still be road legal but it wont be popping to the shops

The casings are weak however the fact that the majority of people tend to use boxes that aint been opened for 14 years or so and have high mileage on them dosent help matters. When the bearings wear the clearance on them is increased which can lead to play/vibration in the shafts hence giving the shafts room to bend on load and the helical gears to thrust the shafts axially leading to cracked casings and stripped gears.

When i bought my car it had a rattling gearbox, i took it out and had it reconditioned, it lasted me a years worth of abuse with no problems whatsoever, i sold it to Luwi earlier this year and he used it for a short period and ran an 11.1 1/4 iirc in the Jap finale at pod, the box still did not break, i believe it is now fitted to Jason Gants car as a stop gap to fill in between a custom gearbox being made and his previously trashed item.

It could be worth having the bearings and syncs replaced by a competent gearbox builder whilst doing your power mods to at least give the gearbox half a chance of surviving :?

just get a straight cut syncro ppg box with uprated selecta forks and bearings sorted! hopefully

jeff, i cant really see what that little pearl of wisdom is in aid of tbh ?

The quaiffe i've got is brand new, thats everything...gearset, bearings, baulk rings, synchros, par uprated 3rd-4th selector fork, a brand new box, never fitted, never used, built by one of the most respected gearbox builders down this end, if not the country

i'd rather not see it in a pile of broken bits :lol: and be getting a straight cut gearset in there anyways.

if you want to pay for them and pop down and fit them i'll use disposable standard boxes all day long :lol:

Just read some of this thread and it worried me a little. how much power is big power? and are there many quaife gearset boxes breaking?
just wondered as have just got a quaife box with O.S.Ginken clutch and
it is a bit on/off compaired to the standard box with ap clutch. Always thought the quaife was the way to go to be reliable but this puts a spanner in the works, Should i have stayed happy with my reliable, relatively standard car?

if mine was going to be road driven i'd stick with the quaiffe, most are more than happy with them, i wouldn't worry, just treat it with some respect and it should be fine 8)

Just read through the rest of the thread and think i might be ok as don't launch the car in 1st and have a single plate os ginken but the gearchange will take a bit of getting used to.

No i ment this season , only having an ecu and boost upgrade for this year.

Will get any rebuidling done over the next winter.

Decided to get my car running and mapped and then for Ian to get my car for a full service and Gearbox fix...

Think he's still waiting on a casing... Might have one by now as someone else was meant to be dropping one off...

yeah the end cone bearings shot across the startline it was also stuck in gear with tiers glued to the surface we had to drag it of the track the noise was horrific.
