Road trip in an R?

Hey there,

Was planning a road trip round europe during the summer (around 3000 miles). Thought it might be fun to take the R and maybe give her a blast round the Ring. Not sure if I'm being crazy for even considering taking her or not! Lol. Just wondered if anyone had ever tried this kind trip in an R before? The alternative is the missus 1 litre corsa :yuck: or am gonna have find another car for the trip!

I'v done road trips to the ring but not in the R yet.

If you can pay the fuel go for it, no point having the car and not driving it. You'll have a ball and the roads out that way are great, highly reccomended

Im going to do this at the end of July, including the ring. Only thing i see that would be a problem would be if i damage the car round the ring. Also you would need new pads and tires after the ring. I really hope all goes well because im looking forward to this!!

Are you going on your own, or have you got a posse together?
I'd like to do it at some stage, but not at the moment... economic down-turn and all that.

Yeah i have potentially got a few cars and a couple of bikes coming along. We havnt fully booked it all up yet just in talks now. I'll check that place out. Is the hotel ok? Dont fancy sleeping in a room with a dead body.

Next year I hope to get over to euroland and a major road drive down to Stelvio Pass and the surrounding roads and area. Then time/money avalible, the ring on the home trip. In the Pulsar ofc :D

yeah the hotel is spot on foods good and the bar stays open till the last person leaves:thumbsup:plus they have a garage there that you can rent out it has most of the tools you need!

You should PM Fubar Andy as he did the trip last year or the year before. He actually recommended doing Spa (as a drivers circuit) which i probably would do over the ring tbh.

I would love to do this but think i would take the R on a trailor and take the diesel, much more reliable lol.

Im going to Spa this year to watch the F1 so I will hopefully be able to experience the track from a first hand spectators point of view :thumbsup:

Cant imagine the cost being low especially if the car buggers up.

If your not taking the R on a trailor id seriously look into the kind of breakdown cover you can purchase prefferably one that takes you home as european breakdown services, once they know your british, will criple you.

This is the breakdown service i use, adac european recovery it covers you in the uk to just a heads up thats all.

you can book breakdown cover through your ferry or chunnel operater,

scratch that, i think they only do up to 15 year old cars

AA Euro breakdown cover will be ok, but it costs a little more due to the car being over 15 years old

£50-60 iirc

We went to the 'Ring for our honeymoon in the R. 8)

Drove across Ireland - ferry to UK - drove to chunnel - then on to the 'Ring. Got in a few laps, back via Paris, up to Scotland, and then back down through Northern Ireland. Think it was about 4000 miles in total. :shock:

Never did add up the cost of the fuel as I thought it would have the potential to make a grown man cry :oops:, but aside from that it was fantastic and we hope to do it again some day. :thumbsup:

Can also back up the RingHaus recommendation. Affordable, nice staff, and literally a few hundred meters from the (public) track entrance. :-D
