Respray

My cars going in for a full respray on the outside soon, is there anything i need to consider whilst getting it done? i.e what other bits to change?

Also the front arches have just slightly started to bubble, instead of chopping the wings would it be a better idea to just change both front wings?

Any ideas are really appreciated :-D

I was going to put up a similar post, may as well jump on this one I guess, and ask a few extra questions.

My rear arches are rusted to the point of falling apart, can you just buy a small section of arch, and weld it in, will it then be filled, or just rubbed/sanded down and painted?

Should all the plastics be taken off, i.e the bonnet vents, sparrow catcher, mirror covers etc.

Wil the colour be exactly the same as the original, and the paint as good quality?

Finally, how much for a complete respray + two arches welded, rust removed from tailgate and bottom of front wing?

Bump!!

if your happy that whoever is doing the work will spend time lining everything back up, then i would replace the wings.

also check the rear arches are in vgc, if there is ANY bubbling then get that fixed at the same time.

you can use 4 door repair sections to get the shape of the arch

when removing your bump strip along the wing ,door and rear quarter, then use a piece of wire (mig wire is good).
use it in a sawing motion along the length of the strips to cut the adhesive, this will keep the shape of them and make them alot easier to go back on after!

defffffinately, the more that's removed the better the finished job will look

that's down to the guy spraying your car, there can be several variants in each colour depending on what make of paint they use. The quality is again down to the guy, he could be crap or he could be great. you'll never get as hard a finish as a factory one as they are baked at high temps as opposed to the low temps used by re-sprayers.

you could go from 500 quid to 1000's depending on who's doing it, how much stuff they are removing, how much work is required once the wings/arch repairs are looked at, how much filling is required, etc etc

a mate spent 4K on spraying an old Alfa, that was after all the repairs etc had been done. The quality of the job was absolutely awesome. Flawless paint.

Ive just replaced the rear archs with new 4 door ones, cut to shape obviously. You can get them from a panel suppliers locally id say.

Also replaced one of the front wings (about to replace the second) for completness as rust has started on the inside face and around the holes for the arch trims.

Wings i think were something like £40 each cant remember the rear arch cost.

You will have to spend time cutting the old arch out ensuring that you are within the template of the 4 door archs. You may then have to cut the inner archs out and rebuild depending on how bad the corrosion is. Weld both inner and outer. Filler the outer and sand (forever) to get the correct profile (extremely hard to achieve without specialist tools) then filler prime, prime the whole lot then top coat it all.
