reliability and daliy driver

I have used mine everyday for 5 years now. Its been ok apart from a few incidents but generaly anything that was going to go gave me some warning before it actually died.

Petrol is the biggest problem but I am taking it off the road for a while to fuss over it a bit more. The only thing I suppose is that it feels a bit less special when you drive it all the time

So there still a few that are daily drivers then which seams good , and bensmith why did your engine give up? Do you think going to ring had anything to do with it ?
Dont think so- I went to the ring in july but have only had problems since last month.

I fitted an uprated ECU without getting it Dyno'd- the results are yet to be diagnosed (engine is coming off a week monday) but it looks like I burned out the piston rings from poor fueling.

A bit less special, how dare you say such a thing!!!! ;-)

I agree though, half of the fun of owning and R is repairing it yourself.

mine was my daily runner for about 3 months, but mine has lightweight bucket seats with minimal padding and stripped out/caged with side exit exhaust, id had enough of getting up at 7.30am and driving to work in it lol, so now have an alfa romeo 147 as my car and keeping the pulsar as my toy, it is used as often/not often as i choose depending where im going.

You'll spend more time fixing the alfa than the gtir! italians and electrical item's are things that never work together.

im not bloody turning this into a discussion on alfas electrics lol, just like the saying of fiat/alfas rust- they do not rust, and have not rust for like 15 yrs+, in my experiance iv never had or known of electrical problems on an alfa, its always peugeot (inc citroen saxo) or renault

your right the rust thing is bollocks on fiats and alfas that was cars from the earley eighties that were aggro (fiat strada,127,131 and alfa sud's were the main ones).

if you don't have leccy probs then lucky you your one of few.

nope, they don't rust but the electrics are still shite!
I know a couple of people who've said similar things; one had an Alfa as the company car a couple of years ago now... when they returned it, they walked away as a puddle of its oil got bigger underneath it. - They loved driving it, but it did ultimately let go.

i had a alfa 164 v6 as a daily driver for 2 years, didn't rust, all the electrics worked! drivers side shock absorber spring seat collapsed turning into a bend at 90mph, that was fun! but what finally killed it was the the diff crying enough and shitting itself, a common fault apparently.
I don't know what it's like to have a GTIR as i daily driver, hopefully i will find out when i eventually get the car built!

By the time you have finished yours there won't be any alfa's or other gtir's left and everyone will be in hover cars...lol
