yeah, they have a serious problem with the crank lol ... even with the weight of the airbags seats etc etc he should still beat the impreza, even though the impreza has a dogbox

i see your problem though pal ... there is what seems to be massive lag for you, i will be the first to admit i havn't read the whole thread, but you should be exiting at a much higher speed lol

Sorry if this is a hijack, but I am having lag probs too. Mine is a rally car with a GT30 and 34mm inlet restrictor, and I am going to remove change the atmospheric dump valve and fit a recirc one. Do you (any of you) have an opinion as to whether this will help?

To be honest , i was reading about this same thing on the Sr20 forums. Once i go with a new turbo, injectors, MAF and ecu, i was considering going for a blow through setup to help throttle response, This will require putting the BOV before the MAF and also considered (testing) recircualting the air back before the turbo. I leaning towards a Tial QR BOV which can be used as a recirc or atmospheric.

I'd be surptised if it makes any difference at all.

Once the throttle closes, the higher pressure air will want to exit to atmosphere, it won't want to go back up the pipe it's just come from. I don't bother with a dump valve and the air exits past the turbo pretty quickly still. Many people who use a recirc fit a higher quality unit with a 2 stage stiffer spring. This essentially jams the DV closed and gives people the feeling that it is better.

Just disconnect your feed to the actuator on the DV instead. That will stop it doing anything more cheaply than buying a recirc with a stiff spring. If you've got a cheap DV that can't hold boost then remove it and cap the hole.

Jim, won't it hurt the turbo and stall it if the "trapped" air has no where to go but back from where it came from.

Listening to a lot of the cars on Best Motoring/Hot Version (if you know the show) for instance, it seems most are running without dump valves. I can't see it having any effect on performance except for removing the risk of a leaky dumpvalve. I've never seen anyone mention no dump valve as the source of turbo failure, have you? :)
I've been thinking that it would be fun to run without a dump valve just for the hilarious noise it makes, but I've been thinking that a 3071 at 1.6+ bar would run into problems considering the stress the compressor wheel would be under. But if it works for Jim, it just might work for me too.

Good thing I read this, I've been thinking about blocking the vacuum to my dump valve, but forgotten about it. I'll try this weekend. :D

Does this an experiment?
A full throttle run through the gears monitoring speed against time and boost pressure (compressor surge should show). Firstly with the Atmo BOV working, then with
it disconnected, and ideally with a bypass BOV in.
This would be very interesting

Apologies first to trip for hijacking his thread. After 4 years of running 1.9Bar, doing track days, rolling roads etc my HG fails, not my turbo. Not running a BOV might put more strain on your turbo bearings but running >1.6Bar will wear them out faster anyway. Whether this is faster than your pistons, HG, block etc only time will tell.

I did tests ages ago that showed around 0.2ms improvement in boost response between a DV and no DV. The DV went from 1.9Bar to 0bar almost instantly, the non DV still dropped to 0.7bar in a gear change but maintained some pressure in the system when the turbo started working again. The 0.2ms was effectively the time taken to go from 0 to 0.7Bar.

@trip I'm happy to delete this guff on DV's in a day or two. If someone else wants to talk DV's then we should really set up a new thread.

I agree.. I new thread should be raised discussing this interesting topic.

Ta Qali sprint was cancelled. Instead they did it in Gnejna.

Car ran really great, best so far. Although I could do with a little more boost, the clutch slipped a little on launch. This might be my last race for this season. Next race i will be busy on a stag's weekend off to another island.
Praying for bad weather so the race gets postponed for another weekend when I am free :rain:

Time flies just as my money.. Pity i cannot say the same for the amount of upgrades I managed to squeeze since November.

Nothing confirmed but 2011 season should start around 2nd sunday of March. No date was announced but every year they start around this time.

I didn't do much as i was busy bulding my engine, after a fresh rebuild and one race, it was drinking coolant. I decided to give it a try myself (after my tuner's failure, i might as well do it myself) and opened it up and found the block needed some skimming. Put everything back in place, So far no coolant missing even after 30minutes of idling and giving her some gears with wheels off the ground.

New mods for this year:
Forged engine (build my me)
GT2860RS turbo with 1bar actuator
AVCR boost controller
Close ratio semi helical dog box (done by Drenth in Holland) with similar ratios of an RB
4 point lower strut brace
Longer wheel studs
New custom made shift light (still needs testing)

Item's i had on the agenda but had no time were :

20Ltr fuel surge tank
Full poly bushes at the rear
Bigger calipers at the rear together with new copper brake pipes and hydraulic hand brake
Z32Maf and 700cc injectors together with a mappable ecu.
Wide arches
New coilovers and custom made topmounts so i can play with camber, caster and track.

I am planning to run with 1bar of boost using a Field access ECU together with 100 Octane fuel. AVCR will be only used for better spool for now. I need to get used to the gearbox as it feels very different from what i am used to. I will be running some spacers front or rear depending how it goes in testing. Once i get new coilovers with different spring rates, and fit wider arches, i can play around 'trying' to get the car less understeer.

IF...IF (only if) i do not break it, the big jobs like brakes and fuel tank will be done in the summer break.

Update. I had one last Sunday. Needless to say like all other times, i finished the car just in time to make it to the start line.

The car was all over the place, I don't know why or what but I felt as if I am driving a hovercraft :) . I was running with new coilovers and wider track. More camber in the front and less in the rear. Toe was 0 all 4 corners. I will go back to the drawing board and rethink my setup.

I ended up doing only the practice runs because before staging for the timed runs, the new Dogbox did not want to go into gear. YIPEEEEEE. I am replacing it with a quaife as we speak and the Dog will be sent to UK for alignment/shimming.

That's tough mate, but at least you must have been a bit cooler in the car with the new white paintjob!
