Is this were the temp gauge is suposed to be?

DMM is cheap and a must for any diy owner.
So is OBD consult cable and the software can be free, obd scan tech nissan is now released free and project that datascan software forked out from .
consult1 cable can be had here for under 20USD, multimeter with temp probe about same but can get half that price and they just good enough for basic car work. Sensor simulating with some resistors alway good too, sending known values from nissan FSM allows you judge gauge accuracy, ecu calculates data values in tolerence, circuit switching cold/hot idle control test, airbags test, knock bypass sensor test, speed sensor output basic test using LED, etc etc .
I always aim diagnose/test first rather than just throw new parts at it. Got be careful with cheap new thermo sensors too and need check them with dmm as many fall out of oem value ranges, with aftermarket and reman parts, just because its new doesn't mean it any good . Most of the sensors on the old R are pretty easy do test plus with standard ecu the logic is pretty basic so easier trace/conclude faults accurately.

Ok ive got a consult cable and downloaded ecutalk has any1 used this? Can i do timing off this? Or best to use a timing light?

From memory I don't think you can use this to set the timing. The procedure for checking the timing is to get the car fully up to temp stop the car and remove the tps connector. Restart the car and test with a timing light. Removing the tps stops the ECU from altering the timing while idling. Watch the timing on ECU talk and you will see that it advances and retards trying to keep the base idle in the correct range.

Ok cool ive got a timing light , so do i clamp the spark plug wire on the 1st clynder? And line up the far right notch? For 20 degrees

Yes the crank runs clockwise so far left or last mark on the pulley, when you put a timing light on it you will see it as the mark closest to the fire wall. Give the crank pulley a good clean so you can see the marks.

You have 6 notches on harmonic damper pulley
2nd in from your left as looking at harmonic pulley is TDC
furthest most notch to your right as looking at harmonic pulley is 20deg
If your idle high get 2nd operator slip clutch with car in gear to drop idle to low/mid 900
