I'm looking for a Pulsar/SR20 engine specialist!

Hello all, I am new to the site, so bare with me...

I've been offered a Nissan Pulsar for around £500, it belongs to one of my friends dad's, and it needs to be gone off his driveway, there is however a sad little story behind it which will justify why it's only £500.

about 3 years ago, the father of a friend of mine bought a Nissan Pulsar straight from the importers, with around 50,000 miles on the clock... He loved it! Loved it for about 6 months, and then he decided to get some tuning done... Now I'm not sure what exactly it was he was getting done, but it's probably irrelevant to this story anyway, all new pistons and rods, and a new racing clutch fitted, and some other things...

Anyway, so the car is in the garage having it's work done, the mechanic removed the engine and stripped the whole thing down, and then unfortunately the garage went bankrupt! gave my friends dad his car back on a trailer, with the engine in pieces in many big boxes! That's all done now and the family are over it, but the car 2 and a bit years later, is still sat on the driveway, slowly getting trashed by the weather and people passing it. The engine remains in pieces in his garage...

My question is, for £500 should i buy it and attempt to rebuild it myself? would it be worth it in the end?

Is there a guide on the forums, or on the web at all on rebuilding the SR20 engine?
Or maybe better yet, does anyone know of anyone (in the UK) who could rebuild the SR20 engine with their eyes shut?

Thankyou! :)

F.Y.I when i say rebuild i mean build it from scratch!
F.Y.I I am quite a hands on, patient guy, who has done average mechanic work. (I am not a mechanic)

Where are you in the UK?

If you're in the south I'd suggest giving Ed at Fusion Motorsport a call: 020 8816 8586 (copied from their website).

If you're in Scotland, then somewhere like Agra has a great reputation for motorsports engine building.

If you're up for the challenge, you could try rebuilding it yourself (and get the satisfaction of knowing it's all your own work); the workshop manuals are freely available online. - If you need it, I'm sure someone can post a link.

Yes, where abouts are,you in the UK, that will help to direct you to someone that can rebuild it for you.

However if you are mechanically competent then rebuilding an SR20 isn't any harder than building any other engine.

I'd be tempted to give it a go if mine died. - I'd probably have someone else do things like the head work and resurfacing the block, but the assembly I think I could do.

It would probably take me a long time to do it because at every stage I'd be asking myself "Do I refit this part, or should I replace it; do I even need it?".

£500?? Jesus snap his hand off these cars are rare now spend time and a little cash and you will have a great car

It really does depend on your level of mechanical competence. A lot of the members on here are pretty handy with spanners so will often advise you to have a go yourself, which is very admirable. But if you do not have the required knowledge and as importantly tools, (any saving you think you may get over paying someone to do it could soon be lost if you have a well stocked tool box) could be more expensive and time consuming in the long run.

Buy it and buy a second hand engine. That way you can get it working alot quicker and use the bits for spares or build it up as a spare engine so you can do it at your own pace.

Hello all sorry for the late reply, and thankyou for all the interest! I'm in Southampton... The problem I'm worried about is the engine is literally nuts and bolts lol. I think there is going to be many bits and bobs missing! oh well, I think i'll buy it anyway! Has there ever been any books called "building the SR20 from scratch"? That would be a big help.

Cheers

Unfortunately it would probably be for other variants of the SR20 (i.e. the Silvia) so not a huge amount of help. - On the upside some of the internals would be upgrades for a Silvia.

For £500 you really could take shroom's advice and buy a spare engine and drop it in whilst you rebuilt yours. - You'd have a working engine to compare it to (and somewhere to scavenge parts if you were really desperate).

We're a pretty friendly community, so if you get into difficulty the chances are good that someone will be willing to help... I find that beer and/or lunch helps.

Yes, you're where I got the suggestion from.

I'll edit my post to make that clear to everyone if it will make you feel better.
