I'm assuming they are on about base timing so would of checked with a timing light, get yourslef one off ebay for a 5a and read the guide on here, you'll have it set within half an hour.is the Nissan diagnostic port 100% accurate? should i just take it there to be done?
thanks for the offer as usual but excuse my ignorance, I wouldn't know a timing gun if you shot me with it lol. I work as a business manager, a calculator is my weapon lol. I just love driving my pulsar, not fixing it.When mapping a car, the first thing I do is match the base timing to what the ECU thinks it should be. Then when you read 40deg or 5 deg in the ECU, you know that is what the engine is experiencing. Afterwards you leave the base timing alone and do all modifications through the ECU.
If you have a standard ECU with a fixed map then adjusting your base timing a few degrees to improve response or reduce det is normal. If you change the base setting from 20 to 15 deg then you have to remember everything you read in the consult is 5 degs out.
@perrin21, 10deg if read from the ECU or crank implies a problem as it's too low and would explain a lumpy idle. I have a decent timing gun in my garage that you can have a go with if you like. Takes 10 minutes to check timing.
I wouldn't change anything else until you've fixed that first.
I realise that, I don't mind helping other members out as others have helped me in the past. If you just want to go to a mechanic then you could always go back to spikey again?thanks for the offer as usual but excuse my ignorance, I wouldn't know a timing gun if you shot me with it lol.:lol::lol::lol::lol::doh:Ah... someone fixed your idle fault by fiddling with the timing instead of finding the problem and sorting that!
Or Jim's engine out day at Southport ,It could be something that isn't particularly obvious. - Can you wait until the RR day? I'm sure you'll find someone who can cast an eye over it then.
