headlight scoop

I’m going to do a headlight scoop for the R (about time I did something performance related :-D ). I know they've been done before, but no one seems to do em anymore.

I have a pretty good idea of what it needs to look like, but could anyone with photos of headlight scoops (R or any car really), stick em on here. Give me some ideas.

(thumbnails you lot!)

Cheers, toby

what about doing one for the indicator and then you could still be road legal??

A few years ago I think I saw a GTiR that had front mount intercooler. I'm sure I saw a picture that showed fabricated "channel" mounted as part of the bonnet scoop, It took the air that was meant to be going to old top mount intercooler and directed to the air intake.
Does any one know who makes such an item, or is it possible someone could fabricate one.

I think this would be a better idea as it can stay in place all the time.

SE Nissan i think made that... Could be wrong but i think Steve Pudney made one up too... Either him or someone else on the Forum...

Yes it was SE Nissan who orgainlly made the kit. And yes it's Steve Pudney who is making a copy.

loving the sound of this, ive been looking at ideas like the replacment indicator thingy, but just apprehenisve because of the legality issues

I've seen the indicator scoop, and the bonnet duct scoop too.

The indicator one is a great idea, but it doesn't look like it gives much air-flow. I was thinking of making one but a bit bulgier (new word). I also doubt it can be made road legal without making the indicator surround fully reflective (aren't cracked headlamps/indicator glass mot failures?).

I've looked too at taking half the area of the bonnet scoop and ducting it over the air filter, or dropping it into a box like the se nissan one (like rally cars still do). Half is then left for general engine cooling and oil coolers. I mocked a crap one up (cardboard, don't laugh), just to see if my tmic could be retained, eerm, it can't :-D . But is sounds like steve has this one covered.

I've also ideas for proper brake ducts (one of mine is still on the nurburgring :p ), ducts to flow onto turbo, integral front splitter, oil sump duct, rear splitter, window lips (stop wind noise), flared front wings (only subtley, but enough to get a duct out the back like on an escort cos), reversed side vents (think this has been done) etc etc. So much to do !

Going to start with headlamp scoop as always good for drag/track/daytime.

What should the duct taper down to, inch-wise?

Another idea I've seen used on a rally car.

Make an airbox that sits in place of the factory top mount, (similar shape and size, could use 2 flat panel filters side by side for example) and the airbox feeds straight down into the turbo. (Via AFM where applicable)

How about an airbox that has an air scoop from the head light or brake duct or somewhere and u can fit an induction kit in to the box (enclosure type thing), would that not be a good idea? Also if u make some brake and turbo ducts I'll be very interested in them, Cheers.

I know if a white bulb/light is shown thats an mot failure so im sure a lense being cracked / broken would be too.

All that hassle for a little hole in your light...its not really worth it........... you might aswell just get a scoop.

those little holes can't be their main air feed surely?

I'll start with the headlight scoop, simply the easiest way to go for drag use.

I'll look at brake ducts and whether these are a better place to site a proper permanent air duct too (like oe hole but better ducted).

Centre vent is ulimately best kept for oil cooling and general engine bay engine cooling I reckon.

why not just buy a set of those twin light things that nemphis do and take out the buld on one to create a air feed

the lights are expensive though i tyhink around 450-500 but not sure

yeah toby, i agree with using the break ducts for a permanent feed, i was gonna tackle this recently and fabricate something with bits and pieces, but if ur gonna do it properly usin some nice plastic molds and stuff, il wait on it.

i was just worried tho incase it mucked anything up with the brakes, having one side with air getting to them, and the other brakes air being diverted. would u not end up with one brake constantly alot hotter than the other? uneven wear on the pads or something, i dunno. maybe to paranoid!

its just a thort but could somein like this not be done ? keeping the head light but makeing a hole in it for a cold air feed ? it works in japan on some of the monster evo track and road cars why not on the R

You are such a prize plum Lionel :der: you really are

For someone who's supposed to know there cars I would have thought you'd know those headlights on New Evo's, Honda's e.t.c are made out of Plastic (standard from factory) thats how they are able to have a ducting hole in them. A little different on our 15 year old glass.

would a primera twin head lamp conversion fit the r. as i have wanted to do this to my last r. and if so you could remove one of the lights.
