Was talking to Dave (antilag) the other day about the weaknesses of the gearbox on the R when looking for big power and possible solution when we came on the thought of transplanting a Evo box into a gtir
Has anybody ever looked into this or tried this before :?: the gearbox is the same basic setup (eg fwd with transfer box) and providing the tranfer box would fit around the rear of the gtir engine without offsetting the gear box we recon it could be done with either a modified evo bell housing or a adaptor plate that bolts to the R engine then the evo box bolts to that, then using either a modifed evo flywheel or a redrilled R flywheel to fit the Evo clutch etc obviously it would also require custom front drive shafts and front prop aswell as a modified gear linkage aswell as some other messing around but the benefits would be.
Gearbox good for 700+ bhp
Lighter gearbox setup so would help the handling and balance of car 8)
Better front/rear bias
better diff technology etc etc
I've just been checking out the mlr and secondhand gearboxes are around the £400 mark to 8) even if it cost £1500 to fit it thats still a hell of a lot cheaper than a Par/quaife gearset and the whole transmission would be uprated so there would be no transfer/diff worries either (apart form the rear one that is)
Ahh would probably also need a custom crown wheel and pinion for the gtir diff though as the ratio will probably be different but then again i'm sure the rear evo diff could also be fitted with a modified rear beam and drive shafts
After all if they can fit skyline boxes in Ford escort cossies etc why can't we do the same with a Evo box :?:
