Engine Strip help

Rightyo fellas,

the engine came out this afternoon, nice and easy. even in the wind, but having never stripped a SR20 before, theres a few things i need to know.

How do you take the cam chain off? is it a link job or just undo the tensioner?

Do you have to remove the cams to get to the head bolts?

I just had a quick look at the engine after removing it.

Im going back over to the lock up on tuesday night to strip to a bare block to check my bores prior to ordering pistons.

Any advice greatly appreciated !!

theres a timing chain tensioner just above the p/s pump, undo the 2 nuts and the tensioner will spring off and can be removed. if you want to remove chain you need to undo front timing covers and undo crank pulley.
can be done by removing link, but is far easier to remove the covers to replace it, as its awkward to fit back with covers in place!

the cams have to be removed to get to head bolts

cheers for that.

Just looked at my CD manual thing,

Bit of a crap design having to take the cams off to get to the head bolts mind, never really come accross that before.

hmm, im just thinkin ofvauxhall and pug engines ive done in the past. never mind.

So in strippingthe cams out, im gonna make sure everything goes back in the same place, torqued up etc. do i need to worry about shimming ?
