been looking at center diff ,does anybody know of place that can build custom center diff's for the gtir, will quiaffe do them as one off,s? or perhaps somewhere further afield like u.s? want to ditch the viscous

theres an advert in either ppc or track and race cars, cant remember who it is but they do specialist diffs, i'll try and find it for you, be the first useful thing i do next year

Qaiffe wanted min 25 order or 20k IIRC, although there was a place in Oz that done a small run of 10 for the front diff in Torsen design.

the oz place do they still have them? any details?,what type where they?

front differential or Centre differential ?
i still daze at this

front is at the rear transfer case

centre is inside the gearbox ?

from what i have gathered about the gtir is that
normal spec has viscous center and rear diff not sure if the front diff is viscous but i have seen one and it come in spider configuration
the so called dakar had lsd center, front, and rear weather this true is questionable!
carn,t go into great deal about diff's because of my imperfect knowledge so here what i know,

VISCOUS diff termed (open type) has many advantage them being, one it is more reliable than some, (if the oil is changed on regular basis,) can handle alot of power, and is road friendly, the way it work is that it uses fluid to lock diff depending on whichever wheel losses traction and spin's. in the gtir you,ll notice that when launching the front wheels spin until the fluid has suffcient move and then lock's the axle.which give less stress to drivetrain.but the disadvantge is that the oil heat's up and cause alot of drag and power useage that other don,t,also the fact that you carn,t control drive or torque distribution to rear biased. also useable torque is restricted to by wheel with the least traction

L.S.D differ they have plate with clutch on each side of the diff. which give both wheels the same power output, they are more harsh on the drive train when launching.the power and torque loss with these diff is less and they have less drag.

A.T.B diff (automatic torque basis) quaiffe make the one the best diff's. very modern, can handle power/ torque to different wheel, without slippage, has the ability to give 50/50 percentage of power to each wheel.you can launch harder/faster because there is no fluid to wait for

A.Y.C active yaw control which use fluid to to control torque and power distribution not sure how good it is but the majority of evo ditch for the rs version

HELICAL diff, this diff uses gear for distribution is better than the above due to the fact it can change torque output to rear biased. is really strong
durable and efficient.
increasing power to rear torque biased will obviously give better handling characteristics, less understeer.

if anybody wish to add info please do so, if i have made a mistake feel free to correct me

8) very interesting thanks. IF the dakar pulsars have lsd`s all round and lsd`s give less drag, then dakar pulsars must have more power at the wheels than a standard pulsar :?: :?:

would be intersting to find out the drag percentages of both cars?

there is couple of way to make the front diff into lsd easy way is to weld them togeather (not practical but possible)
another way

nicked pic from cousin,s downunder  (hope they don,t mind)

there was a groupbuy arranged on the Starlet GT forum for the ATB Quaiffe diff they got ten to buy them and they came in at £500 all in maybe they could do the same for our centre diffs group buy anyone?? think all you need to do is provide a std one for them to work of.

i Just worked out the transfer losses based on the rolling road shoot out at pts as all cars were on the same rollers, and the average was 31%.
so our transfer losses are probably the higest out of all the other jap cars. scoobs work out to be around 20%. So fully synthethic gear oil and lsds are need on the R if u wanna reduce power loss through the box and diffs.

this is worth a read

perhaps we can start gruopbuy with quaiffe for the front l.s.d.to be frank really would prefer this

but the newer t3 version, it has helical geared diff with better torque bias. the icing on the would be to have diff that gave more consistant 35/65 torque split  if quaiffe did one that has similar output then this would be one to buy, the handling would be soooooooooo much better
oh perhaps cusco one!! have checked this out!!!

go to movies and have look at the evo. awesome :D
