Evening all
Need to service my R for the first time and I'm looking for recommendations on which engine oil to use ie: brand viscosity etc.I only use the car every other week and when I do use it it's for mainly short journeys.average 1000 miles a year!
Many thanks Kris

I would not use 10/50 for what he has described he uses his car for. Fuchs 5w/40 would be far better for short journeys

not really given me any issues and mine is just used for driving to work and back everyday, its what was recommended as the best stuff you can buy for it, might try the 5w40 next service though to see if there is any difference

if the car is standardish, used for road use, and not ragged hard, 5w40 is perfect.

if its modified, driven hard, use 10w50.

I use 5W-50 (Valvoline VR1). I've used 10W-50W and it was fine (Fuchs), used 5W-40 (Fuchs) & it seemed to use oil a bit more. I am hoping 5W-50 will be a good comprimise for my R.

fuchs 10w50 is what i use for my daily
Ditto. - Pro-S fully-esther synthetic.

I figure the ambient temperature around here isn't really cold enough to warrant 5w40, plus if the engine has a few miles on it the higher viscosity oil might be better for the larger tolerances. - Equally you could argue that, depending on where you are, the ambient temperature isn't warm enough for 10w50.

So basically any of the 2 is good enough? my car was run on 5w30 by previous owner then on 10w40 then i switched to the 10w50 and noticed big difference in general smoothness of the engine

my whole understanding was that you want it working at the optimum temperatures. (if I am honest top of my head i can not remember them) so 5/40 5 is for start up from cold inc winter and 40 is at optimum protection roughly something like 90deg c to 140 were as 50 is something like 140 up over so on short runs will not even be hot enough to be at a temp to protect. 50 may be smoother probably because it is so thick at low temp so top end sounds quieter etc but its more masking than protecting. I could be wrong but going off my oil temp gauge run 5 or 10/40 run oil cooler in summer and would use 10/50 or even 60 on track
