never understood the YB fuss. Its and ancient block, dodgy head heavy and unreliable. Agree with the 309. I had one after my ford days and its was ace (bit ugly though)

Don't agree with that in the context of the engine,

Neither do I, but the brakes they left the factory with?
Even the lead designer on the project acknowledges they were way below par for the car and that was my point.....the enthusiast buys one and rectifies the shortcomings that the factory fitted. The interwarmer and gearbox are other areas where the owner puts right what the factory got wrong.

Lol at the Ford jokes. I've had a escort cossie and 2wd saph. Mrs has just bought a focus rs which I've gotta say is a nice looking car.

my all time favourite though other than the gtir would have to be a r5gtt.

I don't think "ancient" is relevant, BMW used the M10 as a base for its F1 engine and that worked out ok.
I'm unsure what you mean by "dodgy head" as it's regarded as a milestone in production car engineering and "unreliable" has me at a loss too. As I mentioned earlier though the engine is way too tall and heavy, but that's a result of the bean counters.

well I drove all three and found I got on best with the 205 1.9, lift off over steer and enough power to slide the front at will too......you just had to drive the 1.9 with more care than the 1.6.
Maybe "better" was a poor choice of word on my part.
Let's just say the 1.6 was a far more balanced car than the 1.9, although perhaps not as exhilarating.

You know they have a mic under the bonnet that records the engine noise so it can pump the sound it into the cabin....

I heard that but thought it was a load of c**p obviously not, they should of put an electric dump valve on aswell no need for a turbo then lol

the m10 was hardly the base for the F1 engine (the cast maybe) as for the YB being a milestone I'm not too sure the were plenty of other good turbo engines around at the time many of them Japanese. The YB was effective but wasn't particularly strong IMO.

yep I think you're right plus lots of other good stuff. The YB was good in a agricultural way but there were much better built and refined engines around at the same time. it has to be said that some of these engines were not really exploited in the way the YB was

Lotus 907 was even better than the twink...modular construction..in the 60's, shame they used rope seals and it pissed oil everywhere...
Dolly sprint engine was great, single ohc 16v, the first production 16v engine in the world, set of delhorto or weber sidedrafts and a tubular manifold and you had 180hp easily...

BMW m10 block was used as a seasoned block by BMW not a special casting.
Correct, they left themoutside their workshop in cologne I believe it was for 2 summers and 2 winters to weather the blocks before they were machined....got a book somewhere talking about it...
The same factory did the same with the 1400's they used in the zakspeed capri's

Actually you're right, I'd completely forgotten about that. I seem to remember there was a rumour doing the rounds at the time that the blocks had been pee'd on as part of the "seasoning" process, lol.

The only real reason, tbh, that the YB's tuning potential was exploited so fully was that the Ford fanatics took it under their wing. You chose an excellent word in "agricultural" as the YB is a bit rough and ready although that's to be expected when you combine a Futurama head to a Jurassic park bottom end, lol.

Wasn't that the Jensen Healey?
Good shout on the Dolly btw, great car and one whose reputation should be more widely known than it is.
