New engine is in and turbo number 2 is on its way out smoky on idle and little puffs now and then , and then there was clunking on the drivers side found out on christmas day that the track rod end was sliding on the rod , i dont now if its the thread in the end or on the rod can i just replace the rod or is it the whole steering rack. Starting to give up thinking of just fixing it and getting somthing more realiable :( im having troble seeing the light and potental anymore :( what you lot think i should do sell or fix turbo and track rod end ect ? Or is there always going to be these sort of problems?

I know the feeling mate but luckily your problems arent too major.if you go on ebay you can get a brand new set of track rod ends for about £30 i believe it is.if its on the tie rod i would try re-cutting the threads first and see how that goes.failing that and maybe someone with more experience can correct me if im wrong but tie rods can normally be replaced as they screw into the rack.will be a ball ache to replace but will be considerably cheaper than replacing the steering rack.as for the turbo i know the feeling but luckily there are many members on here that have cheapish turbos for sale tgat would get you back up and runnibg and hopefully get you enjoying your R.hope this helps shed a bit of light and restore the faith a bit

Don't be soft!

Get these bits out of the way and you'll have a good working car

Granted there not a brand new these cars so they will need some £££'s to look after them and keep them in check.

Like many on here, people have thrown money at these cars maintaining them (including me) but once its all working non of that will matter!

Get it working and then enjoy the car!

been there, seen it and done it, wasn't a pulsar, but a series 2 rs turbo, i'd fix one thing then the next weak link down the line would go a day later, ended up selling cos it was a daily driver that i needed to be reliable, so go rid for an 92 MR2, no more issues

sound like you've bought a something that could probably be doing with taking off the road and sorting out all the issues in one go, i've had project cars that i've had to use as daily drivers and they never get whats needed done cos i always "needed" access to a working car.

most cars around the pulsars type/age/price range will most commonly be a 2nd/weekend toy as you cant put too much faith in a £2k performance car that had probably quite a few "unsympathetic" owners over the years.

A good rule of thumb is:

Fast
Reliable
Cheap

you can only have 2 of the above at any one time

get a paper and pencil and a mate that know cars and take note of EVERYTHING that looks like it needs replacing/upgrading and if you get a long list then you'll then know whether your hearts/wallets in it or not...performance cars need love and like anything else that "wants" love it'll f#ckin try to break you to test that love...and like other "things" in life they may get traded in for a "new" model, or sold on or even chopped up in some cases lol.;-)

mate, get it sorted. I purchased my car for £3k, then had fun getting insurance (£800) and then went to get a MOT and ended up forking out another £1800!! I was on the verge of giving up and getting rid but have been driving around in it for 4 weeks now and loving it again. Nice to get nods and thumbs up from people driving by. Its all worth it so get it sorted!

How about car , 2.5k , then as soon as i got it turbo went £250 , then insurance 3.2k for the year , thenthen brake pad fell out! On the rear nearside , so new pads n disks £60, then £1320 onn new engine and bits and bobs , and now the turbo AGAIN and the track rod thing , all in the space of 2months on a shit wage , thinking if theres going to be £200 here and ther oftern! As i literaly can not afford it :(

I'm in the same boat as you mate, shit wage at the mo, but i take it your about 19? 20? with a insurance premium like that? id say your premium is whats swallowing your car maintenance not your crap wage, thats £300 a month on insurance alone, thats a lot of money to drive a 20 year old £2.5k nissan around

if i had 300 quid a month to spend on a car maintenance/mods every month I'd have a good clean example of that model by the end of a year, 3k buys a lot of parts....could you maybe look at options for having pulsar insured as a low mileage weekend toy?, and buy something like a seat arosa diesel for day to day (really for when the pulsars broke lol) running around in.

I don't normally say this but if I was you I'd sell up. £3200 a year is just stupid. I always wanted a pulsar starting from the age of 17, it took me 8 years to get one and I'm glad I waited. I'd seriously consider getting something cheaper to insure until you're older with a decent amount of NCB.

mate how old are you?thats a crazy amount of money to be paying for insurance, have you really tried shopping around for insurance for a better deal and also if you pay for full membership youll be entitled to discount with an insurance company of about 20% i believe it is which is always going to be a bonus.

i know the feeling about your R breaking all the time.a week after i got mine the turbo went so i forked out for another one.then my dizzy packed in,then a rear wheel bearing then my ecu packed in while i was 70 mile from home so had a recovery to pay for aswell.now im half-way through a full build which ive spent the best part of 7.5k on over the last 10 months.like every old performance car they need time and money.only you will know what the car means to you and what its worth to you so forget all your mates saying its a bucket of sh!t etc as it will probably hose their cars when its fixed and ask yourself if its a car youve always wanted to own or if it was just a passing phase then youll know wether to sell up or not.

Well on a 1.4 saxo its 2.3k .... So its sort of worth the extra 1k a year , whats more dishearting is that i sold my pride and joy , (kawasaki er6n 2009) for this pulsar that breaks everyday on me and i also sold my astra coupe turbo 2002 243bhp, all this for a pulsar just cause i wanted one! And start to regret it , ano that if it was just realiable i wouldnt care about anything else and i can understand theres going to me ball joints track rod ends , clucths tyres ect but not new engines and another turbo. Ill see what its like after sorted the turbo out hopefully it is just the turbo and see where i stand then , maybe ill have a full month out of her before something else breaks, my pulsar experiance is even puting me off turbo cars , thinking on jumping on the vtec wagon

Vtecs are good, you put fuel in them, thrash em all day long and they just take it, just dont expect acceleration anything like the pulsar, ALL the turbo cars i have had always needed more money love and time than the n/a cars i had, but then the the n/a cars weren't trying to put out figures of almost double the power from the factory unlike the turbo cars.

personally i can see you selling up, simply cos you said you owned a bike before the pulsar, common sense will say at some point this is costing too much for the performance i am getting in return and you will sell it once the bike weather appears (all us bikers get that spring twitch for a bike lol) for a R6 or something

how old are you mate paying 3.2k. Unfortunatly these cars are getting quite old so history on them is getting vague and they are being ragged to with in an inch of there lifes then sold on. Also the reason why these cars are broken and the reason for the insurance being so high is that young drivers bought these cars either wacked the boost up and blew them up or crashed them and when they were getting imported quite alot in the early 2000's this put insirance up. Now there are less about due to these reasons
