improve torque?

i see lots of people, myself included looking for BHP gains but isnt the Torque the real figure worth chasing? What are the best ways of improving the engines torque?

Worth chasing in what way? To brake gearboxes?

I always disagree. Two identical engines but one with more torque at the same revs then yes the one with more torque will be faster. If torque was the B all and end all, then why aren't all racing cars diesels?
F1 cars are a prime example. Loads of BHP but nowhere near the same torque.(probably less than some high power cars on here)
Torque and bhp are directly related, so if you increase torque you increase bhp anyway. The forumla to work out top speed only asks for bhp, not torque, go figure.
For me, higher revs and big bhp with less torque is the way to go.

In my opinion, torque is useful for those who want acceleration potential from a relatively low RPM. If you are cruising around the town and want to overtake (a parked car, a Subaru, or a pesky cyclist) immediately then you will want torque since you're not going to be driving around in a gear which has your engine speed in the region where peak HP is obtained. However, race cars, who will always be in a gear which places them in the optimal HP range (ie above 5000 RPM for our cars) have no need for torque since they can rely on HP alone for the acceleration. It depends entirely on your driving style which would be useful, but for my track car I'd only care about HP since I'm always going to have the car in the upper RPM range.

I think WRC cars are limited to 300 BHP, but aren't limited with a torque figure? So while 300BHP is easily obtainable, they have to do a lot of additional work (eg on the head) to maximise torque to give their car an edge.

Anti lag and about 3 bar boost from 2000rpm is the reason rally cars have so much torque. I know back a few years ago 2006-2007 ish most of the wrc cars were making around 450ft/lbs at 2000-2500 rpm.

The reason they don't make a lot of power is the restrictor limits the airflow further up the revs, i remember seeing a boost graph from a focus wrc and once it gets past about 6000rpm the boost pressure was down to about 9 or 10 psi.

Never really understand the obsession with torque over power. They are so intrinsically linked that you cannot have one with out the other.

IMO the problem actually comes from a lack of understanding as to how they relate, rather than which one is best to have.

Even though the 54C has the highest Torque output from all the sr20det :)

Thats because honda owners have never experienced it lol. If the first time you saw a cow it had 3 legs, you would assume all cows had 3 Legs.

The question is a little off the mark which is why everyone is having a laugh. Neither a single hp or torque figure is indicative of anything. The >500hp cars are making around 200hp at 4.5K. A well setup 330 hp car will be making the same at 3K. You need to talk about spread of power and response. Here is a thread by another member who compares his experience with a 2860 and 2871. Not wanting to sound like a stuck record but fit a full 3" system to improve both power band and response.
