Where do i start?

Right as from next week when my astra vxr goes i will be on the look out for a pulsar (why have a car with gearbox issues costing 10k when you can hae one for 2k :D )
I am gunna be after a near standard GTi-R or possibly one through a work friend, which is meant to be 'the works' although it has been sat for about 3 years, it only needs a clutch to get it working, again i am unsure of the difficulty of this?
My proper n00b question is . . if i get a standard-ish GTi-R what mods should i be doing to get it running a reliable 280-300bhp? I read on here that is what the engine can take comfortably. I did try the search option for the above questions but had no luck finding answers :(
Thanks everyone

OK I'll give you a couple of pointers, For a start it all depends on the health of the engine and box in the car you buy. And before you start making it go faster make sure you've up rated the brakes first because standard ones are shit, To get 300 ish bhp you'll need to up the boost to around 1- 1.2 bar depending on the car. But you'll need to sort out some kind of boost controller that doesn't spike. You should get away with 1 bar with out modding the fueling because they run rich from the factory but you'll need to get it checked on a dyno to make sure it's ok.

But do a forum search because the question you're going to ask have been asked MANY MANY MANY times before my friend.

oh brakes, suspension etc is not an issue, i just know nothing about engine tuning in these cars, the only jap i really know is the b series honda engines after many weekends of playing with my mates track car.
I did look long and hard for a tuning guide on here but found nowt!

cheers john, banter welcome :)

Cone filter(make a heat shield), mongoose exhaust(I have a downpipe back one for sale but they are loud), dawes device set at 1 ish bar, walbro fuel pump for an easy 300bhp.If you want it to be a bit smoother/more powerful/safer get a nistune remap of the standard ecu using a daughter board done by Ed at Fusion Motorsport.

Mongoose exhaust? Only if you want to go deaf!
If you're spending the money I'd recommend getting one made-up with some big boxes in it; at the very least that stops the boys in blue following you everywhere and you won't need to worry every time they check the loudness at a track.

You must have caught Mr Doe on a good day; he's not normally half as polite or as helpful! - For a change I find myself agreeing with him.

It really all depends on what you want to do with it.

I recommend driving 3 or 4 cars before you buy any of them.

Even if you do buy the first one you tried.

Pulsar's vary so much in condition you'll learn heaps trying a few.

Then stick it on 1 bar and beat your old crew in their vxr's :-D

I did say they were loud, but they are also a cheap and reliable way of making more power if you don't mind the noise.I've just has the rest of the system made in 3" with 3 boxes in it and it cost over £400 just from the downpipe back. Not everyone wants to spend that much.

sorry to jump in three boxes have you had a db test done and what boxes did you fit please. i am busy getting a 3" but side exit to do away with the bends at rear subframe area and knowing alot of tests proving how much some boxes kill your power?

Haven't had a db test but my ears tell me its a bit quieter on tickover, a fair bit quieter normal driving and loads better on the motorway. The 1st 2 boxes are just like the mongoose decat and that long cherry bomb like tube. The last box isn't particlarly big, maybe a foot long and 10" wide but was enough to bring the levels down.

I resent the assertion that I'm normally rude and unhelpful my friend lol.

Don't bother with the goose either mate you'll go deff lol.

I had a custom 3" system with a big quiet box fitted and still made over 500 bhp so you can have your cake and eat it to.

I hate vxr's you will be glad you bought a pulsar mate. But definitely drive a few first there is alot of rubbish out there and with the amount of these cars left its getting harder to find a good one :)
