Is the GTIR being undersold by owners?

I don't think even if we somehow manage to collude and control the market for second hand GTiR's the price will go up that much. I'd love to think that my car will be worth more in the future, but I suspect that it's only the really mint standard ones that are going to increase in price dramatically. That being said in 2004 Top Gear did a section on up coming classics and featured the Corrardo VR6. At the time the prices did increase but then they came down as the market was flooded (relative) by people thinking they could get silly money for an old dog. Now it's only really mint low milers or the Ltd edition Storms which make decent money. I think the reputation of the R and to be honest it's look has counted against it. When I was thinking of buying one I was offered all sorts of advice by friends who had heard from a friend who's brother had owned one that they had chocolate gearboxes (not true), always broke down (probably true), had awful brakes (true) and were shunned by all mechanics as they are so hard to work on (not true). It's only when I take people out for a drive in mine that they start to realise what an underated car they are. Without organising a mass test drive event I think we'll always be bemoaning the prices our cars fetch. That being said I never intend to sell mine so hopefully the price of parts stays relativly low, otherwise I'll never keep her on the road.

The 'R is basically of the same ilk as Escort Cosworths, Imprezas and Evo's, if not better in some respects. I know the 'R lacks the heritage of the other cars, but it is what it is, a 2.0L Turbo, 4x4, rally derived, flying machine, but unfortunately that just doesn't seem to be enough. I wish my car was worth more but its just not going to happen on the basis of the car alone. If its mint and limited edition, or stig blonqvist's old car or something then who knows, but people would seem to rather pay out for a cossie! :/

TBH I like that our cars are underrated and people think they are shit.
People like Clarkson talk utter bollocks anyway and as Perrin says would not help our car one bit, more like drop a piano on it for its crap rally performance.
I personally have accepted its not going have the status of an Escort Cossi or an Intergrale. However its time that we start adding more to the asking price for our cars.
As Danny and Bob have mentioned, parts are getting harder to come across and that will make them more expensive to run.
Also with higher asking prices for the cars, people with larger budgets should buy them. Hopefully these people will spend the money on looking after them as they should be rather than in the hands of someone that's wanting cheap "thrash power" then sell it on when there is something wrong with it.

Need to sell mine at the mo, prob is everyone wants something for nothing, or is a total chav, and can't bring myself to sell my cherished posession to someone who will kill it or worse kill themselves!!
I know the good points of my car, and I know the bad points. Just like we all do, and we know what our cars are. Just gets on my nerves when people go on about a tiny bit of rust, tiny dent etc... But cant ever see the bigger picture.
But I agree I wish I could sell mine for 10K tomorrow, would get me out of a big hole, but these cars are just not worth that kind or money unfortunately. They have never had the tv coverage of the likes of Scooby's, Evo's and as mentioned back in the day when Nissan failed miserably at Rallying Audi, then Lancia were a force to be reckoned with!!

It frustrates me to see Pulsars going for bugger all on Pistonheads and eBay. More so if the cars had a rebuild.
I've seen a fair few rebuilt 'Rs with low comp pistons going for peanuts.
A Pulsar with a rebuilt motor is worth £4k all day long.
Oh and if anyone is interested, there is a white Sunny GTi-R on PH for £2.5k. If that's not an ideal 'investment' for someone then I don't know what is.
I think that Pulsars being cheap isn't all bad. It might not be ideal for somone selling up, but it does give enthusiasts the opportunity to get in to ownership of a car that they ache efor.
I'd love an Escort Cosworth, and if I thought I could get away with it, I'd happily remortgage for a Intergrale Evo 2.

most imports are never really going to fetch good money,some evos and subaru's can be bought for less than a gtir.with stuff like lancia intergrales evo and escort cosworths ect the only ones that are holding there value are unmodified cars with a full dealer history.how many imports can you find that are unmodified and have a full history ?
when i first started looking for a gtir you were lucky to find one for less than £10,000, where as you could pick up a sapphire cosworth for a £1000 and intergrale evos were around the £6,000 mark
