dropped a valve

this was my 2nd time at brands hatch (20/9/2010)
last time i was out the car felt fast in a straight line but not around corners and wouldnt stop, so before this event i set the car up for handling. more camber and caster. toe set to zero. and fitted my yoko ao48s.
next was to sort out the brakes. fitted some carbotech xp8s front and rear.
job done.

so i turned up to the track to see how the car would perform.
signed on got the noise test done etc etc.
wahay time to get out there.

1st few laps i was just warming the tryes brakes etc come back to the pits check and adjust tyre pressures etc

go back out building my speed. wow what can i say "these brakes are bloody awesome"

after about 20 laps im up to speed, i couldnt believe how good the car felt, i could fill everything through the steering wheel and it was a pleasure to drive.

after 30 laps or so im getting rather quick. pull back into the pits and theres about 15 to 20 people looking at the car asking what power its running etc.

went back out there was a new focus st (mountune car) apparently 420hp:shock:
come up for the pit straight his in front, he wouldnt pull over (even tho he could tell im on the left) any way he pulls over and i get past with no probs. next lap im pulling away from him when disaster strikes.
on the pit straight i hit the limiter in 3rd so i go for 4th nothing (shite) go for forth again engine revs (clutch down quick) by this time it was to late. think i may have selected the wrong gear
there was loads of white smoke
so we get my car off track to discover this doooohhh
over reved it dropped a valve piston come up smashed valve into spark plug. you no the rest.

day started like this

and finished like this

messy spark plug.

all in all still a very good day (expensive tho :-o)
today was decision day if i keep the car or break it for parts.
ive decided im keeping it.
the only reason is the car felt so good untill it went bang.
time for a forged lump and 2860 or 2871r:thumbsup:
ps pics will be uploaded once engines stripped.

one quick question.

That's sad news that you dropped a valve.... these engines really do not like high revs without a load... unlucky.
On a plus side, sounds like you were having a great time and good to see you use the car on track.
Glad you are going to fix it and get back out there.
There's a few big spec R's been broken at the moment if you can afford to buy the parts. Couple of engines and gearboxes going a beggin right now.
Look forward to seeing Version B...:thumb:

thanks for the replys, it was still a good day even tho the engine went bang. ive already sorted a new engine thanks to bob. not going for big power tho, to be honest i was happy with what it was running. (310). with the new engine anything over that is a bonus but i wont be going the big laggy turbo route.

boost the brakes are hispec 285s up front, custom 280s at the rear using standard calipers, carbotech xp8s all round and motul racing brake fluid.
the carbotechs are probs a bit to much for road use (noisey, take time to warm up) but for track there surperb and i couldnt recommend them enough to a regular track day user

Sound's like you might have lost 4th gear too,If you are confident enough take the end case off the g/box and check it before you put it back in the car.

i will strip the gearbox red reading, not worth the greif of putting the lump back in to discover the gearbox is gone.

Just remember to take out the 2 detent bolt's and spring's with the ball bearing's and the reverse idler bolt before you try to take the endcase off as the bearings fall deep in side the caseing!

its a pity i cant find the pics of ollies engine that we had to scrap, it seems ive deleted them.
was the biggest mess ive ever seen in an engine....smashed piston, valves dropped through into sump, holed block, broken crank and pebbledashed head lol
it was deffo unservicable:lol:

im guessing yours may be a similar state james.
at least you had fun wrecking it anyway

Sorry to hear about this, my engine dropped a ring a few months ago and found the turbo was shot as well! What setup were you running, standard turbo at 1.1 bar etc?

well the engine is ready to drop on the floor just dont think il get much done today as the weathers looking bad,
pulsarmoley engine spec was pretty much standard mate. this is why im not to worried, if it was a nice forged lump it may have been another story.
standard turbo set to 1.2 bar with a nistune board.

This is the picture that won't show in your thread (even though I've edited it to use the same code as here)
