New engine looms

I have been looking into this for a while now and I'm considering building a new engine loom for the Pulsar. I have found part numbers for most of the connectors used so can get brand new ones with new pins etc. Using contacts I have at work I can get hold of some fancy protective screening/protection for the looms as well so the end result would be a complete new loom that's water resistant, heat resistant and damage resistant.
It's one of the jobs I have at work to design looms to meet stringent military specs.
I'll make one then test it on my car first.
Would people be interested in this?

Hmmm, sounds interesting. What would be the benefits over the standard loom if any and what kinda price are we talking?

it means you're not using 20 year old wiring that's corroded to hell, been hacked up by a d1ckhead, not going to give you false resistances, be more reliable etc etc

How the feck are you going to connect the loom to the sensors on the engine?:der::der::der::der::der::der::der::der:

It's easy enough to disconnect the two looms when you're removing an engine, one has a multiplug in the OS wing area and the other just does the injectors etc.

I'd have one but it depends on how much it was.

yip get your drift, use new connectors, to the sender units and a multiplug some where easier to locate in engine bay would be easier to dissconnect and check for faults , rather than having to try and locate them down the back of the block etc, just an idea :der: keep your hair on

I made a new loom when i fitted a SR20DET into my gti, i used 2 multi-plugs found in the front doors of vectras (i know it's from a vauxhall! :doh, this means when i take say the inlet manifold off, all i need to do is disconnect multi-plugs for the det sensor and 2 water temp sensors (i fitted a multi-plug for each on the n/s of the engine bay), undo one of the vauxhall multi-plugs at the bulkhead and lift the whole lot out.
I was looking for proper bulkhead connectors but the were silly money, like £150 each side.

Exactly what stumo said really. I spent a whole day a week ago sorting out the wiring behind my center console; always had wiring faults on that car. Then when i finally come to sort it out i could see why...... previous owners 'splicing' a 12V feed for gauges etc..... They just twist the cores together and cover in electrical tape so f**king annoying.

I just thought it would be a good idea as i know my engine loom is looking old now and can see where it's slightly damaged in places. It would just ean a brand new loom that would be more robust and well protected really.

If you let me know what the spec is for competition wiring then let me know..... i'll make sure it meets them.

No idea of price yet, i still have to remove my loom and make sure i have all the connector part numbers identified.

I'll use the same gauge of wire that is already there, as it needs to be the same resistance as standard (for things like the MAF where the ECU calaculates airflow by change in resistance).

I plan to get my engine out over the next few weeks so i'll whip the loom out and begin sorting it out.

If someone wanted to have the bulkhead part of the loom connectorised then it shouldn't be a problem; but like warpspeed said... for a good weather proof bulhead connector your looking at over £100 (circular 38999 for example). There are lots lying around at work though that i could try.

I know this is an old thread but wondering if it ever came about really?

Was going to sell up with the house move, wedding etc but sod it would regret it so, next year is going to be the start of a full strip down of interior and exterior, respray, engine overhaul..........

Was looking into making a new loom, but thought id have a search on here first to see if anyone else has!

Fusion Ed has recently done one for me for the ecu loom. It looks a hell of a lot tidier but not something I would attempt as I'm an office boy.

I started on one last week, removed 8 kg from a standard loom so far, will be back on it some rainy day or when I am ready for it and build a new one.
