I have owned an R for a total of a week or so before with the big ends gone so didnt drive it,then i decided i wanted another and was looking but got offered a rally prepped 323 mazda so hit that idea on head.
Now im back in market for a project R and have been offered a pulsar with bottom end problems for £300,problem is that its winter green and i would be spraying it and rally preping it.
Would i be shot doing that to a winter green one or are they not that rare?

Very rare, but end of the day its only a colour and if its in such a condition as that its not far off being scrapped anyway.

They are super rare you can check the vin plate to see for certain but I certainly wouldn't respray it a different colour as only 20 yes 20 were ever made in honour of the emporer of Japans birthday or something similar no one really knows for certain!

I have a 93 winter green pulsar (not gti-r) and its a 60th anniversary edition. I couldn't say 100% but i'd say the winter green GTi-R's were done for the same reason? I'd agree with John, if it was a nice one it would be a real shame to change the colour, but if its bad it wouldn't make much difference.

Heres the only pic i can find of it at the moment, its a pulsar M1 with GA15DS engine. It was my first car, bought it in '98 when i was 17 and still have it. This is an old photo, its a little tired looking now though, has about 200,000 on it, only had 33,000 when i got it. Its a '93 and its DL2 (winter green)

all this talk of there being 20 winter green cars always seemed quite unbelievable, I very much doubt it myself. if they were so rare there wouldnt be 5 or 6 floating about in Scotland alone

Problem is no one seems to know the true amount that exist. I think banded number of 70 seems more likely, as atleast half of them would be dead comparing to regular Pulsars!

When/if I come to selling mine I will be claiming only 20 were ever made though, as these cars are worth nothing so may aswell try and scrimp every last bit of value I can out of it!

I'm pretty sure I saw 200 quoted somewhere, which seems like a more sensible number to me. Maybe only 70 (or 20 even) ever made it to the UK?

200 would be realistic aswell, but there seems to be no official documents to confirm or deny numbers. Winter green is simply a special edition colour rather than special edition car, else they would all carry number plaques then everyone would know for definate how many existed.

I think the main question when it comes to value is how many mechanically sound and rust free examples of the R still exist. Right now it appears most that are for sale are not minters, I mean 2.5k for a Pulsar is silly cheap considering my quaiffe cost more to build!

you're not wrong there, its bloody difficult to find a minter these days, now it just appears to be acceptable to buy one with rusty arches, dont get me wrong I know these cars are getting on a bit, but what is more important:- Price, bodywork, modifications? its difficult to know what to look for, its very difficult to find a good clean shell with ome little extras at a good price. As for price a good clean standard car should easily go for £3500 but who is looking for a standard R these days?
