gearbox where to go from here?

right my standard gearbox has finally given up the ghost,
ive stripped the endcase off and the selecter for third is in two pieces:doh:
i have a couple options in my mind but at present no cash so got a while to think what to do while i sort some wonga....
the most obvious seems to go quiffe, but i have read storys where even a quiffe still wont last?
also how much would i expect to pay to have a quiffe gearset installed buy a decent box builder?
i have also read that you can have the standard internals treated, is this worth doing or not?
any other options that anyone could recomened?

Put in another standard box and drive it with a bit of mechanical sympathay, the cost of a quaife all built up is a rip off tbh and its still not guarentee`d to last. Standard box`s are cheap as chips, use a single plate clutch and change the oil as often as poss job done.

you could buy 8 standard boxes for the price of a quaiffe,

get yourself a recon-box and internals, get it shot peened and/or cry'od , iv known members run upto and over 400bh on a standard box, just dont go lauching the fooker at every set of lights

anyway back on topic he wants to know his best option and the best cost effective option is get another standard box and drive it with more sympathy. Swapping the odd box a couple of times a year is no biggy is it.

Fair play,I'm only running a lowley 420lbft:lol::lol:

What i was pointing out was that people keep on about hp killing g/boxes, when it is torque that kills them (or abuse ,old age etc), 2 cars can be running 400bhp but depending on all manor of things 1 car may have 300lbft of torque and the other may have 400lbft guess which box is likely to fail first


Btw if you were running 520 how come you kept it so quiet from the forum's?

I just like to keep things to myself, some people show off i dont really see the point anyway 520hp is no massive achievment tbh if i wanted to it could have been much more but i built what wanted at the time.

may just try and repair my own gearbox in that case, its got to be worth a go if i can find the parts cheap enough..

hey mate standard gear box parts from nissan are a fearce price, i payed 90 quid for a second gear synco hub and 50ish quid for the two bulk rings that was at trade with the discount we get at work!!!

520bhp is an achivement, 483lbft is higher than anyone else i think too....

how many miles have you done on that build?

As far as I know, even if you do get a gearset that can handle the power (or torque :roll: ), then the gearbox casing becomes the next week link. The lateral pressures will end up cracking the end casing (best case, in which you get to keep the gearset), or completely blowing the end casing off (worst case, in which the gearset is spread across the road/track) :D.

There are a number of gearbox strengthening solutions banded around, but I'm not sure how succesful one is over the others. :noidea:

Talking of gearboxes, does anyone know where I can get some new GTiR gearbox parts other than a main dealer?

still unsure what to do really?
im hoping bob might have a box i can buy at least i can get to the anniversery meet then....
i would like to just replace the broken bits in my box but when i look at the gearset im a bit lost so dont want to start just trying to pull things off it.
