Sill Strengthening Plates

Are the strengthning plates (plates with the round holes) necessary or can the car do without them? Only that mines were rusted so were cut from the bottom half (as you can see), but not sure if they were repaired and re-welded to the sills.

They are necessary as they stop the sills twisting, the chassis are quite 'soft' as it is so they need all the stiffness they can get.
