Hey guys!! My first post.

Looking at getting my first gti-r. Have found one that I like but it is quite 'tappy' from the head. A friend of mine thought it was the oil pump so he has changed it but still the same thing. Is it possible that just the shims will need replacing????

If so, what are they? Where can I get them? How much for?

Thanks guys. looking forward to seeing more of ya

Try getting them off some members on here but you will need to know the sizes first which can be the tricky bit.

Nissan obviously can get them but apears to take a while no matter where you are in the country and not ecactly cheap at £40 odd quid

Ohh there are 17 different sizes ;-)

Make sure it's certainly the tappets bud as, the injectors can be a touch noisy !

Plus, as the engine has solid lifters and a timing chain, it will always be noisier than a 'normal' engine with hydralic lifters and a timing belt. ;-)

Thanks for the replies guys. Its much appreciated. Forgive me as I'm not very experienced with engines but why would injectors make it sound tappy?

17 sizes??? Oh great!!

Has anyone got a good link that shows how to remove and fit new shims etc. Any pics would be great too as not 100% on what they are. Dont worry my mechanic friend is going to help me but I gotta learn somehow

It's just because of their construction, and how they work. From memory, they have a pin that is used to control the fuel that's injected. This moving inside the housing is what makes the tapping noise.

Get a long screw driver, put the sharp end on an injector and then put your ear up to the other end. You'll soon be able to hear if it's the injectors or not ! ;-)

I have a louder engine than I'm used, coming from all hydralic lifter cars. But, it turna out that it was my injectors that were making the noise I was concerned about.

THERE ARE INFACT 81 DIFFERENT SHIM/GUIDE SIZES AVAILABLE FOR THE SR20DET AND NISSAN CHARGE APPROX £19 (price as per 3 years ago) PER SHIM

GTIR_2007 Welcome to the club

Tappets/Shims on these cars are naturally noisy as they are solid (this is a good thing)

As Paul says the injectors are also noisy. If it is a tappy noise that worries you I wouldn’t be to concerned unless the engine appears to be running badly i.e. uneven/bad idle, low oil pressure or poor running performance.

but a rocker guide is a shim! if you reshimmed your engine would you just do 8 valves because they are called shims??? and think 'oh fcuk it im not doing the other 8 as there just rocker guides!!

they are only called rocker guides because they locate the rocker arm, but they ARE a shim end of:lol:

all you are doing is trying to confuse the poor lad whos thread it was.
I know know that but he doesnt know if it is the shims yet

Thats also why i said "Technicaly i was correct" as the statement i said was there are 17 shims not 17 shims and rocker guides maybe MR P was too quick to jump in until he knows he is looking for shims and guides and not injectors or something else

Point i was making to him was there are lots of them size wise not just 3 or 4!

I wasn't to quick to jump in all I was doing was correcting your statement.

Can we ge this back on track now please and actually try and help the bloke rather than confusing him.

 Sorry to cause any disagreements. I used to get this all the time on passionford LOL

Thanks for all your input guys!! If it was a bit tappy i wouldnt mind but it is pretty loud. I would definately say its not healthy. The oil pump has been replaced so deffo not that.

Seems to turn over nicely and idle is good. Still pulls strong through the gears (as it had a little test run). The car is about 5 miles from my house. Do you think it will be ok to drive (obviously granny styley) lol, as i need to get it home from my mates.

Still have no idea how to change the shims? Do you have to take head off??

seen pulsarbobby's idea but that seems arightbodge job to me? Has anybody tried it ;-)

You’re not causing any disagreements ;-)

PM me your email and I will send you the info from the manual

Ps if it was the oil pump in any way I would have thought you would be needing more work done to the engine as I have only ever known an engine with a bad oil pump to be scraped and scored!

The rattle could be timing chain tensioner on way out or injectors or indeed the shims you really could do with finding out the source of the problem first if you slip the timing you'll be into a lot of money by the time your finished.

This "Rattling" can you record it so the Shim sisters can determine if it is that?

i'm quite new to this fella. Do you mean like record it and post it up? If so how, lol!!

Is the time chaining tensioner an expensive fix?

PM sent fella. thanks:thumbsup:

If you’re having trouble being able to record and post up a vid then perhaps you should enlist someone who knows how to shim an engine with relative ease! ;-)

The tensioner is an easy change bit fiddly but straight forward.

i can do vids but i thought u meant a soundtrack lol

A friend of mine (mechanic) is going to do it but I just wanted to know for my info really. I built my escort from scratch, loom, engine, etc (all self taught) so now i wanna learn bout these;-)

your right lol it is a bodge:lol: but a very good one i may add!
and it does work, if you read all the thread youll see many people that have done it including myself;-)
it will work as well as an oe shim (thats if you can get hold of them) and they wont come out unless you have a major mechanical failiure and end up throwing the rockers, but in that case the oe shims will be sent flying anyway!

your choice at the end of the day, but no one has had a problem as of yet with them, and theres a fair few cars running with them now lol
