Gear box problems ?

Car wont go into 1st or 2nd gear (not mine) it will grind in but not very easily. He's been told its probably worn synchro's, but dont know much about gear box's. Any idea's, is it probably re-build time ?

could be the clutch on its way out!
1st n 2nd are always the hardest gears to select if that is the case! check the clutch arm and pedal adjustment, it may just need taking up a bit.

Cheers for the reply, just had an upate it seems to be getting worse, it now jumps out of first when you try and drive, you have to hold the gear stick in 1st gear position. Also when you are driving along in 4th and back off the accelerator it jumps out of gear.
