Yokohama A048 vs Toyo R888

Rishi

Still waiting on some shims!
There was a little discussion here where peeps were talking about fitting either or tyre...

Was wanting to hear from people who have used either or both Yokohama A048 and the Toyo R888....

I just can't decide which one to go for...

Cheers,

I used to use yoko's A048's on my AE86 corrolla and they were awsome tyres once up to temp! the rears wore down pretty quick but that was due to a heavy right foot

never used the R888's but ive heard good reveiws on them

rishi i was considering the dunlop formula R they seem very good and some scoobys have pulled 1.5 60ft with them get them from dunlop motorsport direct and get 10% off
only reason i didnt use them was toyo did me a deal i couldnt refuse on the 888

Very much doubt anyone on here has tried both tyres so can give an appropriate recommendation
Prob best try the evo forum or some track day forum if they exist :?:

The r888's are supposed to be very good road and sprint tyres but not great for track where they overheat and go off after a few laps.
All depends on what you want them for really :?:

go off after a few laps is the understatement of the decade

i took 3 sets of tyres to brands to test. the toyo proxies lasted about two 15 minute sessions.the 888's were in a worse state than the proxies after the same amount of use.the ao48's lasted the rest of the day with no problems, proberly the next best thing to a set of slicks.

just make sure the ao48's have a least a couple of heat cycles in them before you hit the track in anger.

Rishi - what do you want from them?? good track day tyres might be useless on the strip... I've tried indysport medium/soft for track and they were awesome for 1 lap then awful  (these would be great for a sprint/hill climb).. Then i tried dunlop formula r which were fantasic and lasted well on track but utterly useless on a very cold day at crail :? ..

For me the best solution was to stick to my 195 50 15 yokahama a539's or s306's as they last incredibly well, are £30 and give such good all round levels of grip..There's no doubt you'll get more grip with a road legal slick in the dry , but when they're so expensive unless you have a spare set of track day wheels and not run them on the road, it'll end up equalling your petrol bill
If you are going to put expensive slicks on it make sure you get it properly set up

Jonee- thats interesting you found the proxies lasting better than the 888's
-i'll know not to try them

Well i want them for fast road and track dry use really... Hence trying to decide between the two... Although i'm more swayed to the Yokos...

Currently using the Yokohama A539 which are decent enough... Just that with all this power its going to be silly driving hard in the wet so i'll concentrate on a decent dry setup and so hence the trackday tyres... Car will only see weekend use so tyre wear isn't and issue...

I will use these for sprint use aswell... I'll get them to work...

My only issue is that i want to use them for top speed runs and so ideally need to be Z-rated to modern standards not the old ones... The Yoko's are only V-rated in its R17 form... There are the Dunlop DZ02 which are Z-rated but i've never seen anyone use them before....

Dunlop DZ02 G 215/45/17 Z

For the A048 215/40/17 i was quoted £110 so thats not too bad... Unless anyone else can get them cheaper...? Or knows where i can get the Dunlops cheaper...?

You are trying to do to much with one set of Tyres, the tyres you need for a sprint (all depends on the regs) could be A list or B list tyres.
The B list tyres like the 888 will be great for a Sprint or Hillclimb but will be knakered on a track day in no time at all.
Why not get a set of Goodyear F1,s for road and track days. Then a set of softer B Tyres for Sprinting and Drag racing?
That is the route I have to take if they alow us to use B tyres next year.
The Goodyears are also fantastic in the wet.
I am looking a Kuhmo Tyers for next year, the Welsh Champion tried some this year and were amazing.
Its always a compromise if you try to use one tyre to do the lot.
Cheers
