Yes that's the sensor and it come on 1990 plus cars as i have one on mine.

sorry no pics, its the size of a 10pence coin and is a purpley colour but you can see through it and you can see a circuit board

so the little grill thingy next to the temperature setting does what. it has a tube going to the back of it.

From what i seen on mine looks like it keeps the rear bulb cool! ;-)
