what is a VOLTAGE REGULATOR

hi

what does a voltage regulator do?

only asking as i was flicking through the parts for sale on ebay and this came up i clicked on it to have a look.

then went to find it on my car and it appears to be rusty and a bit shabby

when this starts playing up what are the probs?

could it stop it from revving properly? or is it something completely different

Voltage reg is normally on the alternator itself,it stops the alt from producing any more than 14.4volts and cooking all your electronic's on the car.
