Is detonation the only cause for my R to go into limp home mode?

from the manual:

[EF&EC 387 & 8]
FAIL-SAFE MODE (aka limp-home-mode):
"engine speed will not rise above 2400rpm, ignition timing is fixed at the preset valve,
fuel injection becomes simultaneous, a.a.c valve stays fully open, radiator fans turn on"
caused by malfunction of: ecu, afm, eng temp sensor, det sensor or throttle sensor...

[EF&EC 382 & 6]
LOW-BOOST MODE (aka safe-mode):
"when detonation signs are detected, the solenoid valve turns OFF, and turbo pressure becomes low"
(which is set by the spring force in the wastegate actuator - around 7psi)
and "retards the ignition timing to avoid the knocking condition"

the factory ecu contains 2 different fuel & ignition maps (high and low octane)
and switches to the low one when either of these modes are activated

so howard, if you mean low-boost mode, then yes, only casued by det
"what's causing the det?" is the million dollar question :)
