warning lights

i have the ABS and battery light on and my volt meter only shows 8 volts now. Any one have an idea, i am thinking the alternator has failed?

sounds like it is worth checking the belts not slipping or anything silly and the conectors on the alternator arent all corroded, hopefully the abs light is on due to low voltage
