Turbo elbow, mod worth doing?

I know the stnadard R manifold is a good manifold, where as the turbo elbow is opposite and restricting. Why is it that the turbo elbow upgrade has not been overcome? Forums usually adress these things. No one seems to be able to help, any ideas?

It has been overcome; you need to pay to get one fabricated... it's just that a lot of people don't see the cost as being reasonable.

Imo, your better off getting a whole elbow and downpipe made. Eveb if youu get a 3" elbow made to fit the standard downpipe its a tight radius straight out the turbo. I got my 3" system made with a much larger radius on the elbow.

+1 If I were to start on a fresh car then the elbow and downpipe would be the first thing I'd change as it's free power and turbo reposonse with no downsides.

Everything I've had done to improve breathing on the exhaust side has had big benefits, with the only downsides being extra noise and cost.

The thing stopping 3" elbows/downpipes being mass produced is cost as to get any kind of discount you need enough people to cough up a couple of hundred quid at the same time which is hard to arrange meaningin people end up buying them individually for double that.

That's the big problem though; most people have already got a front pipe they're happy with, and don't want to have to buy a new section just for the sake of the elbow. If you;re doing that, you might as well get an entire new exhaust... then what will you do with the super mega flamer power pro back box you're so proud of?

I don't want any more noise, but I can clearly see that the standard elbow is restricting the exhaust. I'd be happy with a 2.5" elbow, but that puts me at odds with almost everyone else who wants 3"

iv got a modified elbow, which set me back about £200 one of the best upgrades i did to the car.

once iv got my car up and running ill be investing in a full 3 inch system like marc's (williams), I still think we should see if your exhaust fits my car lol!

anyway all in good time i will be flogging my tubby elbow........

with uprated elbow

one thing you never mentioned mo was the fact that your running just standard tubby asnd boost!
for those reasons alone i would say dont waste your money on an elbow or 3'' system......now if you was using an uprated bigger turbo and lot more boost then its a very worthwhile mod but not at your level on a road car

i've been on a 1/8 miles vs a gtir with the same mod has me, except 3" elbow (i still have oem elbow) we're running gt2871r .64 @ 18 psi with supporting mod etc.. he took more than 4 lenght on me, on a short run, we did again, launching hard same result.

ive just started making ss exhausts with my garage im going to get all sizes worked out and make myself
manifold and down pipe and system . the guy that trained me(he is very clued up) recons 3 inch is to big for 3071 turbo to much space for gasses to slow down
if all goes well mabey make some for selling will keep posted8)

As most people seem to have mongoose systems anyway they'd be better off with 2.5" as if you put a 3" elbow on a mongoose you'll have a big step in the system where the 2 meet which can't be good for flow.

There's no such thing as too big when it comes to exhausts for turbocharged cars. In the ideal world the best exhaust would be to have no exhaust as you want the least backpressure possible after the turbo.

This is the elbow I made, its 2.5" to match the rest of the mongoose system. I think I've got to the power level now where 2.5" is probably a bit restrictive so might have to look at making a full 3" system.

I'd agree with that, I had a 3" downpipe going into 2.5" mongoose and as soon as it was changed to all 3" the car pulled a lot better and spooled faster too.Even though 2.5" is more than enough for the power, it just didn't seem to like that step down.

I'll get a pic of mine up. If I had a standar turbo elbow I could see how much the fabricator I use would charge to make them.

I'll need to show him exactly what's needed though. Need to go over anyway for price for manifold and swirl pot.

Totally agree! What you want a nice big horn on the turbo exhaust haha.
