What sort of work are you looking for exactly, is it a remap, specific tuning work or maintenance?

From what I know about Scottish tuners I wouldn't hold your breath buddy, I've heard horror stories about just about all of them.

All tuners are after one thing, your money!

I'd not trust any of them, if you want a list of "tuna" companies on your spec sheet then go for it, but most of what you've mentioned can be done yourself anyway.

Prob's save you hundreds of pounds too...

I fit my bigger injectors i need remap right ? i wont be able to add these just with apexi afm n adjust , im sure i would have no problems fitting all this myself, but to setup injectors i would need to go full hog with ecu or piggyback, laptop and what about a wideband sensor ? + alot of reading and finding knowledgeable volunteer
Ive got money for it and will probably be doing this in future so it might save me alot of money just doing it early and also get some experience before going for bigger power.
Thanks guys.

Just keep in mind that if a tuner is talking then he is lying :thumbsup:.

That goes for every single tuner in the UK not just the Scottish tuners, If you keep that in mind and you check everything they tell and then double/triple check your bill and make them explain every second they've billed you for you will be OK ;-).

I'm not saying you wont get ripped off just that you might get away with just losing your shirt rather than everything you own .

Thats a pretty controversial statement dont you think John?! Have you personally been stung in the past, if so who by and if not why would you be saying something as slanderess with regards to companies you have never delt with.

I fully understand some tuning companies are rip off merchants, others are honest however and provide a good service, as lets not forget not everyone has the skill to work on there own car or has the free time.

Yes I've plenty of experience of dodgy tuners over the years, And if you think for one minute that their is one single tuner in the whole UK that hasn't lied to the people they're supposed to be serving at some time then you my friend are clearly deluded .

It must be nice to see the world through those rose tinted glasses you wear ;-), I'm not saying he shouldn't use a particular tuner because as you say we can't all do our own work, But for warned is to be prepared and to check your bill with a fine tooth comb is just common sense wouldn't you say ?.

Every company "lies" to its customers at some stage, its human nature, however some companies will twist the truth more than others, I am not for one minute deluded, having unfortuneatly worked in sales for 3.5 years for massive nationally operating company I can confirm that the employees of this company, including myself lie on a daily basis.

Rose tinted glasses, I dont think so, I'm well aware that any tuning company, or any company for that matter are in it to make money thus will charge over the odds to do this. Take regular garages as an example, some will charge more than others per hour, why, they do the exact same thing?!

However what I am saying is some are better than others, hence why dont you share with us what Scottish Tuners you have had a bad experience with so our members know to avoid them rather than saying they are all a bunch of crooks as it appears a common theme on owners clubs these days to simply jump on the bandwagon and say every tuner is a rip off merchant?

I mean to a degree Bob could be considered a tuner as he does build engines and fit aftermarket parts. Is he a rip off merchant, I would say no and I dont think anyone else would argue with my opinion as he is an active member in the GTi-R community and provides plenty of free advice to owners, but we all know he makes a profit from it all else he wouldnt do it. Sorry Bob, using you as an example as I do believe there are still good guys out there ;-).

Of course you check your bill, if you dont then your asking to be ripped off but in my experience garages and tuners are quite happy to go through everything on the bill anyway.

thats fine to use me as an example john but completely wrong sorry..... 'a tuner' i definately am not!
tuning is nothing to do with building engines, mechanical repairs or anything else that is mechanically based.

a tuner is merely someone with software access to map an ecu and operate a rolling road.
any other work they do is normally farmed out elsewhere and they add there bit/lot on top, so completely different work altogether.

thats why you should never take your car to a tuner to get mechanical or other general repairs carried out as youll get your ass slapped for sure!
the same as i would slap someone elses ass if they took there car to me to get it tuned....if i wanted to ''which i dont'' i would sub the job out then add a chunk on for myself, but fact is that i wouldnt want all the aggro if that persons engine blew up through being badly tuned, as i would be the invoicer so it would come back to me initially.

To be honest Bob is more of an car enthusiast that also happens to be a spanner monkey, And as such has provided many years of help to the gtir community.

As for naming and shaming dodgy tuners I'm not getting into that I'm afraid, What I think is a bad tuner some other members may think the sun shines out their arse , Well they do until they find out the truth lol.

I agree with Bob if you take your car to a tuner for anything else other than mapping or specialist performance parts then you're a mug, I have a very good local garage and yes I still think they lie but they don't generally over charge and do a good job.

Personally over the years I've come to the realisation that every single person trying to sell you me or the dog something are all lying, It's a sad world we live in these days and I don't really like being so cynical but every day I'm proved right and to be honest I'm getting a bit sick of it.

When you get to my age son you probably feel the same way ;-), I'm actually a happy person . Dodgy sellers of products and services is my pet hate these days I'm afraid .

It starts to wear you down when every time you deal with someone offering you some service or other that you have then go and check on line to see just how much they're ripping you off or go through the bill like a CSI agent .

I have paranoia about all garages to lol,I tend to do everything myself. One of my mates took his mr2 turbo for mot and was working out in van only to be blown away by his own car :-o

Adding new injectors and fitting my safc is easy but its mapping i wouldnt know where to start and if im right id need somthing else( ecu or piggyback , laptop etc then my safc is not needed ?) so i could the add the 550cc injectors myself ? or option to go to tuner get remap with biger injectors and then play around myself with safc till it blows up

Mapping is one of those things you just can't do yourself unless your name is Jim Campbell, I've spent thousands on mapping over the years and some tuners are a lot better than others, The worst tuner in my opinion is the one that thinks the customer knows nothing and wont listen to their views on their own cars tuning. I've not heard much about the tuners in the Glasgow/Edinburgh area to inspire much confidence, I quite like Russ at Wallace in Aberdeen he listens to your views and tunes cars very carefully always mindful of the engine letting go.

Power Station down south also have a very good mapper but they're on the pricey side, Just do your homework and talk to as many people who've used the tuner you want to use as possible and good luck.

Cheers for the heated discussion  given me a few ideas thats a few recommend wallace in aberdeen , extreme motorsport and 1 down south i think ill talk to them find see what they say, then ill use my magic 8 ball and ask it if they were lieing

Would recommend russ at wallace, you can catch him at dazteq on a monday and friday aswell, so saves a trek to sheep shagger land :p

Also with john @ extreme i went to get my SAFC setup, so i could run my engine in before it gets mapped.
On the first run AFR`s wouldnt come below 14.5. and abonded it.

Advice i got was to Junk my AVCr and SAFC and Junk the standard management for an Apexi FC with boost control and he would be able to sort it no probs.

So went and bought a Wideband and set up the SAFC my self, and @1.2 bar it sits perfect on 11.5 to 11.9 depending on which gear you in, upto 5K revs.

So that is fine the now and ran in 2000 miles and is perfect still, just waiting on my ECU back from Ed and then its time to get it fully mapped.

So basically do yer research and aslong as your happy at the end of the day, thats all that matters!!!!
