oh dear! I'll get straight to the point, out racing last night and by mistake went from 3rd to 2nd, don't ask me how! smoke bellowed out the back, told it was white but it looked blue to me, hasn't stopped smoking since, runs on 2/3 cylinders and pops and bangs when no throttle. ticks over fineish but with smoke. oil pressure hasn't changed along with all the other gauges, no knocking and turbo trys to boost but just sounds like a bag of s**t. gonna check the turbo for wear or oil but I kinda think piston/rings or even a bent valve, will a compression test tell if there's a problem in the head to save taking out the whole engine?

any help would be great. also wots the best workshop manual to get? ebay has CD manuals but are they any good?

thanx in advance just can't belive i've killed it after just 3 weeks! my own stupid fault.

Go & pop your bonnet pull the dipstick out and rev the engine if you get smoke pour out the dipstick hole then you have an expensive problem (pistons or rings) sounds like the turbo though.
As for the cds they are of use to any one the one i bought of fleabay was ok.

Thanks, took the dipstick out and there doesn't seem to be any smoke coming out, removed the pipe that goes to the turbo from the air filter and there seems to be traces of oil. would this be caused by blown oil seals on the turbo? could I recondition the turbo myself or is it a specialist job if so where could I go?

Thanks again

The cd manuals are good, get yourself one. May take a while to find what you need though. Good luck!

do a compression check on it;-)
if its only running on 3 cylinders i reckon youve blown a piston (you dont always get smoke and sump pressure)
its the only true way to find out.
and i bet its no 3 piston thats gone (you will know as soon as you remove the plug as it will be covered in oil

if the turbos smoking you normally just get smoke but it wont effect the running of the engine.

Hi havn't actually got a compression tester but is there a way to tell without one? ie spark plugs?

cost is obviouly a bit of an issue but if uprating pistons and rings will save on a rebuild every 6 months then that's what i'll do, thanks

what power you after mate,

my advice would be to get yours apart rebuild it and stick in some forged pistons mate

think you might be right mate, was dyno 267bhp n 251lb of torque at 0.7bar was gonna uprate fuel pump and adjust boost accordingly so forged pistons will now be on the menu!! do I have to take the engine out to do pistons or can i leave the bottom end in?

engine will have to come out as you will need a rebore for forged pistons either 86.5 or 87mm!

I bought one for about £30 handy thing to have

PS did you take the rocker cover off to check you had not flicked a rocker off i know a couple of guys who have done this, 1 got away with 2 new shims plus labour of course look for anyhting not tight up there it only takes you 15 mins to check and you only need a 12& 10mm socket surlely you have them :p

just had the spark plugs out and the plug number 4 (if looking from left to right under the bonnet) is covered in oil, also noticed that there is smoke coming out from the head where it joins the block, defo low compression and oil's getting in there some how but could it be head gasket rather than bottom end. takin head off, any advise.

thanks for all you advise so far, don't know what i'd do without it.
