Tell tail signs

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to find out everyone's opinioun out there regarding the car. What are the tell tail signs of a failed compression in the block? Does anything happen at all? Are any of these the symptons like no power, car runs like crap or just not being able to go up to certain rpm? Also, if the tail end of the car likes to come out or fish tail (only to a certain extent not all) what does that mean? :shock: Does it mean that the car has a afm diff fitted, failed rear diff or just that the rear portion of the car need a afm rear swaybar to prevent it from fish tailing? All information wuld be helpful.

The car will run poorly and sound like a Subaru if it's down on one cylinder.

A compression test will higlight low compression.

Never heard of the Gtir fish tailing, thought that was a RWD problem. (assuming you mean the same as it does here, ie the rear end swings side to side under hard acceleration) If you mean oversteer when cornering , it can be induced if you want it, but understeer is the norm.

Have you got specific problems or just asking in general ?

Symptoms of low compression would be a failed compression check, but it also depends on what the failure is. Generally it will run like crap, possibly hard to start when cold, loss of power etc.

If its head gasket thats causing it then it also depends on what it failed to, water lines, oil lines or air. I'd check for oil in the water, water in the oil, smoke or oil coming from the exhaust etc etc.

If its pistons or rings then it usually shows up on the over run, where oil is sucked up from the sump past the damaged part and you get big clouds of black smoke out the exhaust. It can also cause 'crankcase compression' where the sump is pressurised and can blow oil out the dipstick hole etc.

If its a valve that has failed then you might be able to 'hear' a problem, ie, excessive ticking / tapping noises from the head.

The best thing to do is a compression test and go from there. If thats doesn't tell you anything then do a leakdown test.

Dont know much about the suspension side of things, so can't really suggest anything, sorry
