Had the same problem when me and a so called mate  swapped ECU's because he thought that the chip in his ECU was a phase 3 when he had actually ordered a phase 3.5 chip which I was also running in my ECU so we swapped them over but did not disconnect the battery
Went for a blast but his car was still the same, after we swapped them back the 4X4 light  stayed on in my car at all times which meant the 4Wd was disconnected and I was then running 2WD
Checked everything and I mean everything
but no matter what we tried it would not solve the problem.
THEN I GOT A BIT HEATED  ...........................................................And I have never seen the wanka since
So no £$£$£
After doing loads of fault code checks and even sending the ECU back the company to check the chip was O.K we still could find no reason why
To cut it short I then swapped the ECU with a
(REAL) friend that run the same engine and ECU as me but in a 2WD setup and as soon as I fitted his ECU my car was fine and the 4X4 light  had gone off
Basically I think my so called mate had forgot to disconnect the battery wires when he removed my ECU which damaged it some how :?
I am just glad the GTIR is not like that, bloody Vauxhall's
