running lean(how can i tell)

hi folks is there a way of telling if my car is running lean without taking my car to a rolling road specialist? or fitting a air/fuel ratio lamba sensor?

my car had been running lean previously but over the weekend i found out one of the connectors to the fuel pump was broken and the idling would be affected when this wire was moved, anyway ive had the wire soldered and the car feels better but there is still as slight hesitantcy(not as much as before) under light throttle, is there anything else i can check? i changed the maf for a 2nd hand to see if that would solve the hesitantcy but the car would idle poorly, so i changed back to my old one and that idles fine

thanx

rolling road it. someone will only charge you about £50 just for a dyno run so they can tell you what the fuellings like. alot cheaper than a new engine. dont find out the hard way!
