Not as crazy as it sounds; OK when it's just been built don't be brutal with it, but you want it to bed in for the way it's going to be driven so high revs aren't such a bad thing in that case.
Just make sure the engine gets flushed out with fresh oil.
...at least that's what I read somewhere. I've got no practical experience of this.
I hear mixed reviews some say slow and steady. But with newer engines and materials changing over the years if you pussy foot about to much the rings etc don't expand enough and make a proper seal.
Same with run in miles if you do as many as some suggest then it's half the life of the engine used so to speak
Get rid of the semi synthetic and put mineral oil in.
If you've new cams run at 2500rpm for 20 mins to bed in bearings then 60% load on the engine for 50 miles, drop oil and cut open filter to inspect.
Then a fully synthetic oil and still 60% load for another 500 miles but don't nurse the engine as you need cylinder pressure to bed the rings in, this is the critical bit as you need to get the rings bedded in at this point.
I ran my engine for 20 mins to check everything was ok then it had around a bar of boost and 4000rpm straight from 0 miles, that was a 2.3L with a gt3071. Think I ran it like that for 60-70 miles, changed the oil then upped the boost and revs a bit more for another 100 miles.
And that was my running in done, changed the oil again from mineral to synthetic and then took it to Castle combe.
In this day and age running in for long periods is not needed, bed the cams in , cut the rings in job done, you dont need anything else to bed in. If you are too gentle it will never perform at its best.
When I want to make a fully controlled break in,and the engine is fully rebuild,I am using a dyno.
It's cost a bit more but i can you can manage the load and the boost very accurate and this help me a lot.
Finally I change at list three times the oil filter and the oil too.
I have done something like this, until now.
-Changed the oil to a full mineral type
-Ran the car until 2500-3000 rpm for 200 miles
-Changed the oil and filter
-Checked the filter for impurities....
Put 15w40 mineral oil in it, drove the car for 150 kms........changed the oil and filter to 15w40 mineral....drove another 100 kms.
Put 10w60 semisyn and filter......drove for another 100 kms.....than put Mobil 1 10w60 full syn and map the car!)))
The running was done like this:
-1'st 150 kms until 2500 rpm no load
-2'nd 100 kms 3500 rpm 0.5 bar load
-3'rd 100 kms 3500 tpm 0.5 bar with a lot of hills
