Picked up my re-built short engine today from the Engine builders, only took 18 months to sort out!

Re-built using Supertech 87.5mm pistons.

I just need to sort out the head now

Ported, polished, and flow tested?

It will be nice to see yours back on the road.

Thanks George.

Either I rebuild the one I have with my 264 cams, buy a 2nd hand ported/polished rebuilt head or just fit a bone stock head. Before my engine went pop I was seriously considering going back to standard cams again as most of my driving was off boost around 2krpm. I passed on a £200 rebuilt/reshimmed standard head that would have been good in hindsight.

On balance though I expect it's pointless having a 3071 turbo and not having at least 264 cams installed given that I already own them.

I'm looking now to see what's available and which route to take.

Not only have you already got the cams, but you've got the adjustable gears to set them correctly. - Might as well use the parts you've got rather than buy more.

It's a slippery slope; I'm already thinking about what I could do to keep up with you and Andy at the Isle of Man... and by that I just mean be 10-15 minutes behind you rather than ~30.

Fair comment, setting up the gears properly made a huge difference to power delivery.

Don't worry about needing to keep up, we're not racing, just make sure the car is as reliable as possible.

Use the hks jim, the set up you had before was fine , and I will speak to someone regarding a ported polished cylinder head with all the bells and whistles.

Agreed!

On another note, do really 264's make a noticeable difference when driving the car?

I've had 264's in for years and it's been that long I don't know the difference or feel the difference with 264 against stock?

What the advantage for 264's, say over 272's?

You can use stock valve springs with 264 and there power band matches the cars stock rev range, when dialled in correctly you will gain about 10hp across the usable rev range and the turbo will come on full boost lower in the rev range.

Good news mate, bet you can't wait to get it sorted can you......

If your looking for a polished/ported head :)

I still have my original one. Fully ported polished and flowed head, with enlarged runners and matched/balanced chambers, (minus cams) complete with black powder coated cam cover. All the work was done by these guys http://www.headtune.co.uk/.

I ran it with HKS 264 cams and 3071, it had only run approx 10,000 miles.

Also, I had the internal walls and oilways of my original block cleaned up, smoothed out and polished, the short block is long gone but i still have the internally fully polished alloy sump pan, if interested.

PM me if your interested.

Steve

(edit, just seen Doc's post) this head was rebuilt using new OEM Nissan valve springs :-D

How easy is it to dial in cams, I've never bothered in the past?

Easier to get someone who knows how to do it, you need a positive stop to use in place of the spark plug ( this lets you exactly 0 a degree wheel), a degree wheel, a dial test indicator and a lot of time...you also need the cam sheet with the timing specs.

Same here, I've never felt stock on my car. I've felt non-setup cams versus properly setup which tured it from dirty idle and response to smooth as silk.

Stu did mine as a favour. IIRC it took about 4 hours of fidling and measuring to get perfect
