I know its possible to do the shells/crank, but is it possible to remove them (the pistons) from underneath the car, ie remove the crank etc or will they only come out the top? and tips would be appreciated, cheers! :-D

need to take head off mate as oil squirter would be in the way aswell as maybe some other bits
also to put pistons back in u need to do from the top so u can use a ring compressor on the pistons to get them in

So head off, undo caps and push out the top then?

Think the head would need skimming and new gasekt or would i get away with dropping it back on?

bingo.

get the head and block checked unless you really cant be @rsed then slap it back together but really you should.

Pistons will only come out of the bottom if you smash them into little pieces first

Quite a few R owners have used this tried and tested method but it's not recommended

why do people take the engine out then? is it more to do with rebuilding other things on the engine aswell as pistons and shells?

or for access?

its easier if its out as alot of the stuff up the back is a right twat to get off let alone get back on when you try to put it back together, but you could do a bodged rebuild with the engine in the car if you really wanted to
