Mine had two pages of failures last year... which I thought was a bit excessive (especially as I'd seen them give a Scoobie a really easy test, which is why I thought they might like imports).
I took it elsewhere for a retest, and half of the failures went away; just the things that really did need fixing (worn tyres, which I knew about for example) stayed on the sheet.
If the car is mechanically sound; has no rust within 30cm of any of the suspension or safety mounting points; and no sharp edges that someone could cut their fingers on, then it should pass. - Nobody wants an unsafe car on the road, but some of the testers take the piss because they think VOSA will give them a hard time if the car gets pulled-over.
I also think that a cheap MOT is the chumps choice; if they can do the test for £30 are they going to try to get some extra out of you for the repairs you "need" to pass the MOT? Whereas when you pay £45 you seem to get a few advisories and you're on your way.
