Nismo LSD Fitted, Is this normal?

OK i have just had my Nismo front LSD fitted and immediately i have a question. Is it normal that it should clunk at low speed when cornering, or manoeuvring? I have noticed it feels like a grinding through the steering wheel at low speeds. Im told this is normal and i did expect some audible noise but i wasn't expecting to feel a click and nocking through the steering. Has anyone with one of these got the same? Once im over 20MPH this seems to alleviate and there is a definite improvement to the cornering abilities of the car.

I also noticed that when first fitted the tracking was well out, why would this be?

did you have the lsd opened up and inspected before it was fitted? It will make noise and clunk at low speeds and tight corners but just depends how much. Tracking could be down to disturbing the struts when removing the driveshaft.

Do all the aftermarket LSD's tend to click or clunk at low speeds then Martyn ? or is it just the front or just Nismo ?

yes it was inspected. I wasnt expecting knocking through the steering as well as noise thats all. Its most likely normal but it could easily be mistaken for knackered steering if someone drove it without knowing it had an LSD. I heard some say before and after they couldn't tell the difference on the road, unless the car was pushed hard. Well this is night and day. The noise sounds loud and feels clunky, so much so i was quite alarmed at first, however the handling once at speed is dramatically improved.

You should not feel it that bad,it will clonking a little but not so much that you will feel it thru the steering, sounds like it has to much pre-load.

how is that adjusted?. There were two shims near the bearing so they were reused when the lsd was fitted. Is this correct?

Mine clonks a bit when setting off with full lock on(such as out of a junction) but it doesn't vibrate through the steering wheel at all once moving.

No not all of them. We've had cars that you wouldnt even know its there. Modena and cusco tend to be quieter. Some nismo diffs are harsh and some are just fucked.
If the gearbox centre diff is on its way out then fitting a front diff will make it worse aswell.
As danny said it could be pre-load or a fucked or unshimmed end bearing.

So should there be any clunking through the steering when accelerating slowly around a corner? Say when pulling out onto the road?

Mine is the same. The clunking is it 'letting go' which is what you need to get around corners! I can feel it through the steering ever so slightly. Which doesn't surprise me as when you think about how it works/what its doing.

Cheers ed. I'll hopefully be seeing you next month for a remap so if you would see how it compares to yours that would be great :)

ive had 2 nismo diffs in the past and both of those clonked as do the rear plated diffs....i dont like it and it can be annoying on a road car, sounds like the things are about to break up.

as someone said earlier there are other types where you can barely feel this at all such as in fast guys car (whatever it was he had fitted in there) but very nice diff

So is clonking from the front end a sign that there might be something interesting in the gearbox, or is it more likely to be worn suspension components?

in your case worn suspension bushes no doubt george:lol:
unless you is a very lucky man of course

That's more than likely. - The ones on the wishbones were new a couple of years ago, so it could be the ARB bushes.

It has always done it though; drive about a meter, and get the *clonk*. - I had a mechanic take a look. He said there was nothing obviously wrong or loose... I'd guess it's actually in the struts or springs.

I do seem to get "skipping" from one of the front wheels when I pull a slow turn; for example turning right at a T-junction, but I put that down to my choice of 0'0" toe-in... and some quite worn tyres (the tyre wear is why I decided to go to 0'0").

that does sound like what mine does now the dif is in. personally id check. it wasnt a difficult thing to access. less than half a day.

i guess you could try getting all 4 wheels off the ground and see if all 4 turn when you turn a front wheel.
