i've decided to bite the bullet and go for uprated pistons in my car.

I have decided to go for either Ross or Wiseco pistons. I would go for Japanese stuff but can't afford it :(

What are peeps opinions on either Ross or Wiseco????

Regards
Andy

There was a story on here about how bad wiseco pistons are (from the SR20 forum in the states), but a bit further digging from other members uncovered a bit more about the story, it turned out there was more to the criticism than at first explained and lots of other people recommend them (I even used them in my motorcross days, just not the SR20DET ones obviously).

Ross are great pistons...the Wisecos.....well their ring lands arent any stronger than the standard pistons, in the SR20DET pistons anyway.

Please steer clear of the Wisecos. CP pistons are getting a good rep with the tuners int he US...i will have to find the articles and links later on tonight for you.

I would say either Ross, CP, JE, Arias, HKS ....Trust's pistons are made by Wiseco but i dont know if they are custom forgings done to Trusts specs or if they are the same as the off the shelf Wiseco's. I havent heard of any Trust pistons grenading so i think you should be safe with those..your wallet is a different deal all together lol.

I can only find one case of Wiseco pistons being cracked, but from what i read it was bought second hand.

I've been given a price for a Wiseco piston that has been ceramic and teflon coated. What are you thought's on this?

Myslef and another forum memeber are looking to do a group buy on this spec of piston. Would anyone be interested as we can get them at cost!!!

Sorry to jump in on the thread but at that price you can put my name down for a set.

I believe you've been after my opinions on this question. Suffice to say I'm not technical enough, or had time to do the research and stuck with proven track record of HKS.
I would be asking the same questions myself if I wanted to do it for half the price of HKS

Are these Wiseco pistons GTi-R specific or are they just for the SR20DET engine, do you know what compression rate they are or what size we can get, 86mm - 86.5mm or 87mm :?:
What head gasket are you thinking of using on your rebuild :?:

I've been asking the various tuners for a price for HKS pistons and I've found some HKS for another £120. Not sure what to now :?

What do you think :?:

Being the other forum member organising the GB I'll give you the info I know so far.

Specific to the GTIR? - Finding out but Wiseco manufacture to any spec.

Compression Ratio/Sizes? - Entirely up to you. Again, please understand that Wiseco specialise in the E2E manufacture of forged pistons and can build them to any spec. You even specify the type of rings you want depending on your application, Road, race, drag etc.

Price? - With the current exchange rate I was provisionally quoted around the £215 mark. This is cost price from a friend who has a trader account with Wiseco, hence there is no further discount for groups buys except for sharing the carriage cost.

Carriage, VAT and Duty all in will be aroung the £300 mark although this should fall with a group buy (because of the carriage). Teflon coated sides and ceramic coated crowns costs an additional £85 'ish all in. This is not necessary for moddest applications.

I STRONGLY suggest that those who are interested or have a negative opinion about Wiseco visit their website and do searches on google to get more informed information.

Do these pistons have ring lands no better than stock? - One failed engine, under dodgy circumstances I might add, does not justify a generalisation than these pistons or ringlands are crap. I'm interested in any more evidence.

For those of you who don't know, Wiseco pistons don't "piston slap" when cold like some other applications - this is their trademark.

HKS pistons. Yes they are good pistons, but they are not worth the £800+ price tag. Overpriced IMO.

I'm not going to get into a debate about the quality. You need to do your own research and make up your own minds folk.

My contact is contacting Wiseco to ascertain the necessary info for pistons specific to the GTIR and the options available (sizes, comp ratios etc).

I'll liase with Andy C and keep you informed.

Cheers,

Andy

I'm intrigued, in what way do the rings vary for each app?

Some manufacturers offer total seal rings which don't let the gases slip down the sides. It gives a better power output but I'd imagine shortens the life of the rings.Engine lifespan isn't so important for drag racers.
