Hi to all

I've been browsing this site for a couple of weeks and thought I may as well register so hi!!! I haven't got a GTI-R but am planning to get one at the end of the year, I've loved them for a coulpe of years and now it's time to get one. I currently own an Escort GTi (sorry to ford haters!!!) and about a year ago I attempted a race with a Pulsar without knowing EXACTLY how quick the are!! Big mistake I found out but definately swung my attention to get one. Basically I'd love to pick all of your brains, I've read up about lots of stuff on them but as owners how are they to own?? Is it impossible to have a reliable 'R'?? I look forward to any response

Cheers

Hi & welcome

The R is a very easy car to own without it breaking - unless you start uprating this & that & then things come that little bit more unrealiable.
Everyone seems to think that they are very unrealiable but theyre not - if you do start going down the tuning route thats when things can start to change. Sometimes Some R's break due to it being mapped wrong or something fitted wrong.
The R is the same as any other Performance hatchback - they all need care & attention & a good thrashing now & again.
As soon as you get one it will put the biggest smile on your face & you wont look back!

As Aimee has pointed out, the main and probably only reason the R breaks down or breaks is because either something has been fitted wrongly, mapping has been done wrong, parts are wrong, abused without the attention required after. Basically its like any other car, however parts to replace are alot more expensive, thats where the additional cost comes in.

Do your research on the R, buy yourself a decent one not a dog rough one, unless of course you are going to overhaul the engine.

Oh yes, welcome to the site.

reference to reliability: I have owned my GTI-R for just over 2 years now and it is my every day car, so it has to be reliable! I don't have any other vehicle to fall back on if it goes wrong, just be sensible with your mods and you can still have a 300bhp car, and an empty wallet after buying petrol!

Well thanks for the advice people I've been getting as couple of good quotes insurance wise too so that's good. I'll be on this site quite a bit and I hope i can use you lot for good advice!!! I've heard lots of people say a GTI-R is unreliable, it's good to hear from the people that own them that they aren't that bad. I'm It will actually be used on weekends only anyway so happy days.

Cheers
