Right, not so long ago I had a basic rebuild i.e a couple of pistons to replace the landing rings that had cracked on the other two. I ran this in for 500miles as instructed, which was boring as hell. Then after I had run it in I thought 'great now I can give this sucker some stick and it will be fine'.
Anyway after a mere week of having fun the oil filter housing unit decided it didnt like being attatched any more and broke free leaving a big oil cloud and 3.5litres of oil on the floor and some nasty rattling. It was stopped immediatley and towed home.
After speaking with the place where I got the rebuild they said it should be OK if I got it fixed there shouldnt be any permanent damage, so I got it fixed eventually, by a different garage and and atlast I got it back today.
Yipee I thought, got in started her up, all was fine, drove it for for a while and started to hear a funny sound, abit like a train whistle, its not high pitced a bit like a wind instrument sound is the only way I can describe it!!. This whistle appears just as its comin on boost, and the boost 'sticks' and then the noise goes and theres plenty of boost and all feels fine. The noise isnt really noticeable from cold, but the longer I drive the worst it gets, by the time I got home today it was just the train whistle noise and no friggin boost at all!!! Arrgh.
I've been to see the garage where I had the rebuild (specialist) and we eliminated a dump vave leak and they seem to think the turbo is OK.
Here is a rough Spec just off the top off me heed.

are the turbo bearing o.k remove the inlet to turbo and spin the compressor by hand and check for play the lack of oil may have damaged the turbo bearings.

You might have an air leak somewhere, possibly on a vaccuum hoses somewhere. Check all the small hoses and see if you can spot anything.

If you now have no boost at all, check the intercooler hoses are all on and ok.

Turbos can whistle when they are dead or dying. So it is a possibility if you can get any boost.

check that your dawes device isnt sticking open there is a small hole in it, and this could be blocked causing the whistling then with more boost its forcing it closed, could aslo be dump valve sticking open partially, but i would have thought it would get worse as boost increases

A quick update: Drove it again today and now it pulls no boost, and just makes that stupid noise. It also puffs out smoke when I stop or slow right down at a junction, now to me that sounds like turbo seized and seals gone I will check to see if the compressor still spins but maybe new tubby time, AGAIN!! :(

possible that the smoke is overfuelling though?! Is the smoke blue or black? Could still be an air leak!
