heavy thud from rear....

got a really heavy thud fom the rear,sounded so much like a diff i put another one in(there was play in it) but still have a thud.

it happens when for example your in fourth driving along gently then allowing it to go into overrun you reapply the throttle you get a heavy thud, any ideas or common faults?

could be the transfer box not transferring power to the rear properly?
if you do a search for transfer box/rear diff you should find some useful posts
