Car 1992 Pulsar GTIR Decatted

Fast idle test CO: 3.181 Fail
HC 83 Pass
Lambda 0.938 Fail

Second Fast Idle
CO : 1.417 Fail
HC 30 Pass
Lambda 2.083 Fail

Natural Idle test

CO : 2.049% Fail

Im surprised they have failed me as the car passed fine last year. I thought 1992 vehicles got more leeway on emmissions. Is this correct?

I think they've given you the test for a car with a catalytic converter. - Mine (1990) was MOT'd a month or so ago and passed with:

CO: 0.18% (Max 4.5%)
HC: 710ppm (Max 1200ppm)
Idle speed: Pass
Smoke Levels: Pass

Genuinely on my car because I watched him put the probe in the exhaust (and I said "that white smoke is just condensation, give it another couple of minutes to warm and it will be gone").

Nissan pulsar can't be tested as cat tests they need to be done as default cos imports ain't on regulations so allowed 3.5% co and 1200hc and It's only a idle test too..

from what i understand from having an imported skyline, they have to MOT it with the least stringent emissions test as it wont be listed on the database. The UK sunny will be, but the pulsar wont be. I'll see if i can dig out the information

Decat shouldnt make any difference. Its not a UK car so they dont know what the original spec was.

beat me to it !
seems to be some inconsistency between different testers. my local garage said they would now fail my pulsar if it didn't have a cat irrespective of whether it was an import or not - need to find a garage with a more relaxed approach to the rules before end of August......or get a cat !

My hydrocarbon levels are a little high, but I think that at 0.18% CO I could pass the standard test without a catalytic converter. - Of course I don't know what my lambda reading is, and anything could happen within the next year.

As above though; my Pulsar is not in the tester's computer, so it gets the more relaxed test... plus as a 1990 wouldn't it still slip in as a pre-1991 test anyway? - I'm not sure I've got that right, but I think there's something like that isn't there?

I'm a mot tester my self and ya follow computers instructions so when it fails cat test ya have to input detail stored on computer and imports ain't listed so goes straight to default idle test of 3.5% co so the testers ain't doing test correctly mate trust me..my pulsar had no cat on a 92 it was default test mate..search it on Google and vosa.org.

They havtepid your car on a cat em missions test, that's why it's failed.

My mot tester quite simply just requested that I proved my pulsar was manufactured pre August 1992, so a quick visit to Nissan and a polite ask provided me with a nice little printout giving me the manufacture date of my car.

Off to mot test, 'perfect' says the tester no cat test needed.

Long and short of it is, vosa state that any car on uk roads that is manufactured after August 1992 needs a cat fitted. End of.

What you decide to do I.e. finding an easy going mot station etc is up to you.

My understanding was pre 1995 imports are excluded from emissions tests if less than 3.5%

No this is just basic law according to vosa. I was quite lucky as my j plate was manufactured in Japan 2 months before our uk cut-off.

Not saying this can't be manipulated, you just have to play the game - I.e. finding an not tester that is unsure of the rules etc

I think it's an arsey tester... either that or the V5 says it's a Sunny, and that's in the database so that's the test you get.

Mine was (re)tested after the new regs came in and still passed, but I always say "ignore the V5, it's wrong because this clearly isn't a Sunny GTi."

Just checked up on this in work this morning whilst testing and your car should of passed as the tester should of carried out a non cat test. Basically from an testers point of view he should of checked the inspection manual where the flow charts would lead him to looking in emissions guide where a Nissan pulsar is not listed therefore if there is no info on the vehicle in the emissions guide nor the EGA database then only a cat test is required meaning you limits are 1200hc and 3.5% co and thats at idle.

hope this helps

I generally think he hasnt looked in the inspection manual, some what sloppy testing:lol:
