Engine running + fuel pump problems

Hi all,

I just put my R into one piece again after a long time just standing in the garage.

My fuel pump stays on all the time when I turn the ignition switch to on. It should only pump fuel for a second to pressurise the line I think? I've tried an other fuel pump relay but that didn't solve the problem.

Engine is hard to start, will not start unless I apply some gas during cranking. When it starts it stays alive when I let the gas pedal off. Idle is somewhere between 2000 - 3000 rpm and it sounds like the engine "sneezes" every 2 or 3 seconds (backfires to the plenum??). Rpm drops 200 - 400 revs when the sneezing happens. I changed the cams to HKS 264's, is my cam timing wrong?

Fault code check shows 55, so nothing there.

I recorded a small sample with OBD scantech, I can e-mail it to someone if it helps. Just PM me your e-mail address.

Start here?
Is it hunting?
Hard to start.

Does it make any difference if the engine is hot or cold?
Could be as simple as something sticking somewhere, or as painful as the ECU being on the way out.
Start with the easy bits like fouled plugs if it's been stood for a long time.
Could be that your timing is out - have you had the dizzie off?
Got black smoke - could be that it's over-fueling?
